I usually hand the other end of my tow strap to the other cars owner for them to put it on their own vehicle before I pull them out, and will only ‘suggest’ where they should hook it if they don’t know the best tow points. I’d never use a fricking bungee cord strap on a strangers vehicle either, where the frick did that method come from, anyways? If I can’t pull them out with a static strap, I offer them a ride instead.

    Lol

I live in NY. The other day I was driving home. Seen a car that looked like it wiped out and slid off the road. It was parked next to a driveway so it was hard to tell if it was actually just in the driveway or what. I slowed down but didn’t stop. Anyways after reassessing the situation in my head and me wanting to do the right thing I decided to turn around and go offer some assistance. I go back there two minutes later and thought I seen the lady wave as I rolled up. I put the window down and asked if she was ok and needed help. She said she had already called 911 and her husband. Her car didn’t seem bad and it just appeared to slide off the road. Looked like she was in the grass next to like 4 trees. I asked if she wanted me to pull her out (to save the expense of a tow) since she wasn’t in a ditch or anything that would of made it difficult to try and get her out. She claimed she was stuck on a tree and it wasn’t coming out. I just asked if she was sure and then I said ok and left. I thought it was a little strange as I didn’t see any tree or anything under the car that would of made it stuck. As I was driving away I came to the conclusion she probably thought I could of been some creep who was just trying pick her up, and try to kidnap her or something. I guess today’s society as gone such to shit that people actually become fearful in situations like this. Anywhoo, I respect her decision and hope she got out. I just didn’t want it on my conscious that I didn’t offer some type of help when I could of. And since I was just getting out of work I had the free time to actually stop and try to help.

Moral of the story: although you may want to help and feel better about yourself for helping or trying to. They may not want your help. Especially here in NY lol

That's some points I hadn't thought about. I'll give people a push or let them use my maxtrax, but I don't strap up anyone these days. One is because of the safety and liability aspect you mentioned. The 2nd is a point one of my PD friends made. "People stuck in ditches that went off the road in little cars did so for a reason. If you rescue them, you are basically just resetting their accident timer."

She told me that because a car with bald tires that had no business being in the snow lost control and went into a ditch a few days prior, a good Samaritan like us pulled them out, they kept going, lost control again, and went head on into a car and killed 5 people.

I'll help people all day long out on the trail, but I don't help in town anymore.

I agree, except when I had a winch with a synthetic line.

I considered it safe, and low risk to let the winch pull someone out. I have not gotten around to adding a winch, so I would not pull out anyone to save them $50 on a tow truck.

Just enough to look kinda cool.
Just pulled a friend that's staying at out house down the road, he got stuck at the corner. Front wheel drive Hyundai in 4-5 inches of sticky snow.
