I just purchased a new 2019 tacoma SR5.. It has the pre- collision system, how do I know its working without crashing it into a barrier or worse another vehicle? My wife has a 2019 camry with the pcs and it works fine . I did a little testing with a 3ft tall cardboard box in the drive way and the camray warns to brake and when I didn't it stopped the car very abruptly a foot from the box. Well I did the same test with my Tacoma and no warning and it ran the box over both times that I did the test.. anybody got a sure fire test for the system short of testing on the highway where it could turn out bad if you know what I mean.

The Tacoma has face recognition so it can tell when you’re being an asshole with boxes. If you do the Bird Box challenge it won’t be able to read your face, so PCS will work.

There was a guy who tested this with boxes and was supposed to provide video but that never happened. I would say just drive normal and act like you dont have it. If for some reason you come across a situation where the system could have saved you but it didn't, then that info can be retrieved by the black box. I don't even think about the safety systems being in my truck. I do like the BSM but I dont rely on it.

@96carboard said he would volunteer to replace the box for a real world test.

Just consider yourself lucky for not having the dreaded PCS malfunction see dealer light . So I think it’s working as intended .

Mine has warned me to brake before, but never tested to completely stop without me braking at all.

Maybe but some tin foil on the cardboard to give it some signal reflectivity?

As hilarious as these cardboard tests are, it does make me wonder what the threshold for activation is.

That said, we were deprived of "footy for the boyz" from the last guy.
