We added this guy a few weeks ago...he's a black lab/mastiff mix rescue named Hank. Just had his most recent vet visit, weighed in at 41 lbs @ 15 weeks old, he's going to be stout (vet estimates 105-120 lbs). He's quickly reminded us how much work a puppy is.

The last couple pictures are with Bogey, our other lab/mastiff mix that we rescued about 3.5 years ago. Bogey is hands down the best dog I have had or ever will have. He's my right hand man (Hank is supposed to be the wife's dog).

Thats a solid mix right there, since you have two, random, planned mix, or request around for when the mix comes in to a shelter?

So when you all are saying Mastiff, are you referring only to the English Mastiff or both it and the Bullmastiff? I know there are a bunch of other Mastiffs but generally think of these two. Thanks and sorry for all the questions but I do appreciate the help. This forum is awesome.

The first one was a little random - we had a deposit on a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy that fell through, so on a whim I stopped at a rescue to look at a Ridgeback mix. That one wasn't a good match, but I met Bogey and it was an instant connection. He bonded instantly with our elderly lab that we had at the time and it was just meant to be. After learning more about the mastiff personality (which he exhibits very strongly), we knew it was the right breed for us. So on the 2nd one we were actively looking for another mastiff or mastiff mix at all the rescues and when Hank came up we jumped on it. It basically gets us a dog that looks like a lab on steriods (bigger head/chest/shoulders) with a calmer, sweeter personality.

I have more experience with English Mastiffs, but Bullmastiffs are supposed to be great dogs too. English tend to be calmer (lazier?) and a little bit more people/kid friendly. The only 2 Bullmastiffs I knew were sweet once they knew you, but were definitely more wary/aggressive towards new people. Every English I've ever been around has wanted to do nothing but sleep on the couch next to you.

Ha. We got him from a shelter. Super loyal , kid friendly, loves attention....
Hates any other animal ,the pizza delivery lady, mailman, furniture delivery guy, ups guys, Amazon driver and any thing that moves!

I just know who ever had him didn’t give 2 fucks about him.

He weighed 60-65 lbs, had missing fur, you could see his spine and was super shy. 28CBF90A-8243-492E-9D71-2CC148CB4AE5.jpg

2 years later he’s still skidish, still hates anything that moves(animals) ,

Thank you. This would make me lean more towards the English Mastiff, especially the lazy part!

Yup, that’s the ticket. My neighbor has two.
Sweet dogs, but a stranger wouldn’t just walk thru a door hearing one or looking at them.
They got a younger English mastiff. Came right up to me, with a couple barks, I fed her a stick from my side of the fence, she loves me like no other.

Totally agree with this. I was keeping an eye out for a dog for over a year and when I saw his pic, I was, yep this is the one...
    IMG_0399.jpg
We were the only ones that applied for him and I didn't find out his story until later.
Sad, but people can really sux sometimes.
