So some asshat hit my truck as it was parked on the side of the road. Nailed the rear passenger wheel (parked on the left side of a oneway street). Rear suspension is trashed, along with the axle and diff most likely. Body damage to the rear quarter panel and broken tail light round out what I knew before taking it to the body shop.

The other car had enough damage that they only made it two blocks before the car died. Made it easy for the cops to find! That and they left their rear view mirror behind. Nice of Ford to put their logo on the inside of molded parts.

Apparently the real damage is to the shackle hanger where the leaf springs attach. It is part of the frame and can't be welded back according to the body shop. They are looking into full frame replacement. I'm guessing the unsaid other option is to total it, but it is a 2018 with less than 20K miles.

Anyone had a frame replaced on a 3rd gen? Will it ever be the same? If I have any say should I request it be totaled?

Bonus update to the story, the other cars insurance is now claiming it was stolen. Funny how that wasn't part of the story the cops told me when they cited the driver.

Wait, so is the hit and run driver trying to commit insurance fraud?

    Ouch. That's not good.
Btw, Are those vinyl overlays on your wheels? Good to see those held up pretty good.

It will never be the same as new. Would think that if the frame is in that bad of shape, they would total it.

    Seems that way.

An yes that is the vinyl overlays. They've held up like a champ!

So as a follow up to this, the end result was totalling due to the bent shackle hanger. Frame replacement plus the other known damage put me at 75% replacement cost, and they had not even opened up the rear axle to see what was damaged inside. I'm in the middle of selling my house and buying another one so I can't even do anything about getting a new vehicle until we close. My rental is a Ford Fusion... same car that hit me.

I'm probably going to go with a 4runner, since I won't need the bed for house stuff anymore. I also can't find a long bed in my area, and certainly not in cement. I'll probably have some parts to sell here pretty soon!

Glad you’re being taken care of and not hurt.

T4R are sexy. Getting the TRD OR?

Sorry about the truck but I love my 4runner. If you don't need a bed it's a better vehicle.

USAA was pretty painless as far as insurance goes. No fighting, just patience required. Gotta say the t4r forums aren't nearly as good as this one!
