I accidentally posted this in the colorado forum instead of the 2nd gen forum and I didn't know how to change that so here goes again.

Cheap Keyless Entry for 2G Tacos

    Factory Options
Has Power locks but no keyless entry. The Locks are triggered either by the interior lock switch, or the key turn in door.

    Disclaimer
I’m not an electrician or autotech. If you fry your yota that’s on you.

I’ve been told that if you can find the harness for keyless entry receiver(brain) behind the glove box, (sometimes it’s their even if your truck didn’t come with Keyless entry) then you could get an OEM keyless entry receiver/brain, disconnect the battery, plug it in, reconnect the battery, and then go through some weird set of gameshark cartridge level cheat code maneuvers to program a new fob to that receiver.

The problem isn’t really in reprogramming. There’s plenty of instructions on TacomaWorld for this, you put your key in and out, open and close your doors, chant something in latin, smack a plank against your head and BAMMM your in business. The problem is that the fobs cost $30 and the receiver/brain is $800 ish or more from toyota or ebay. Maybe if you can snag one from a junkyard or someone parting out.. Then it might make sense and that might be easier and something you're more comfortable with doing.

That said.. Once I figured this out, it was easier than I expected. And it cost $12.95. That is not a typo. Just ebay search "keyless entry kit"

I bought a base model 2nd gen with no keyless entry. It was driving me nuts!! I kept walking away and then realizing I didn't have a ClICKAH! (remote or keyfob)

So I'm new here. This is my first tacoma. I'm loving this forum and the fact that there's so much support for mods and I can see, what looks like what, before I install it, just by checking this forum out.

BUT, I couldn't find a thread where anyone had successfully done a cheap keyless entry mod. I found OEM thread that seem'd expensive and more trouble than it was worth. And I found allot of people saying just get a Viper system installed by a shop.

Heres how the cheap ebay system goes>>>

watch the video i made and maybe you can do it just from that.. but I'm not the greatest videographer so I'll try to break it down here.

There are a few different ones on ebay with different clickahs. They might have one or two additional wires if you go with another kit but the cheap ebay ones with the receiver box like the one i have, should be more or less the same install.

The first thing you need to do is go on
    https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/vehiclewiring/1/yeard/Toyota.html
and find your vehicle's wiring diagram to cross reference, I can't be sure yours will be the same as mine.

this pic shows how i glued some zip ties to the receiver/ brain to mount it. also shows all the wires so i can give a breakdown.

    WIRING

    The oranges-
are for cars that need a pneumatic motor installed to operate old school locks with no existing power. My truck had power locks just no keyless entry so I didn't have to do shit with these. Just cut 'em and shrink wrap 'em

White= Lock/ "closing signal/arm" hook it up to your purple wire in the kick panel that comes from your driver door.

White/Black stripe= unlock "opening signal/disarm" hook it up to the green/black stripe wire in the kick panel that comes from your driver door.

Both Yellows and the Black= these need to be grounded. easiest solution is in the video. crimp them together in a screw loop and ground them inside the kick panel.

Red= Your power source. Hook it up to the constant 12V White/Blue stripe going to your ignition. shown clearly in video

Brown= Positive signal to your Parking lights. Hook both of these up to the DARK green wire in the White terminal on the upper left side of your driver fuse panel. see video.

Green= supposedly sends a signal to roll up your windows. I didn't really car about this since I live in Colorado where it seldom rains and I tend to leave them cracked so it's not a complete oven when I get back. But I also couldn't seem to make this wire do anything. Maybe you need to hold Lock down on the clickah or something. just cut it and shrink wrap it.

Blue= Third button on your remote. Hold it down and this will provide a ground. I hooked it up to my horn so I can find the truck in big parking lots. Green/ Red stripe in the white terminal upper right side of your driver fuse panel. see video.

    Thats literally it. Your done.

**Finding the Violet(purple) and Green/black stripe wires:

Fuzzy pic of the taped up terminals coming through from your driver door to your Kick panel.

Clearer pic after I removed some electrical tape... the violet(purple) wire and the green/black stripe wire can be seen in that white terminal on the left coming through from the driver door.

If you watch the video you can see I just traced them from there to a more accessible spot just by my left ankle in the kick panel.. I made my connections here so i could check them in the future if the keyless entry acts wonky at all.

So far SO GOOD. Thing works flawlessly and with great distance.

    P.S.
I'm sure somebody on here has already commented on this but HOLY Chickentits! What an awesome place to store your beer while you change your spark plugs. you can smack this thing with an elbow or wrench and it won't spill. Beautiful design toyota.. my favorite thing about this truck so far.

I'm sure some people will be interested in that wiring stuff, but could you post a few more pictures of the beverage retention system? Asking for a friend.
