cap/ shell to truck sealing

other than the dealer supplied adhesive foam strip (instead of), is there a better gasket material around?

A lot of cap installers used the newer bulb style weatherstripping. The width of the seal probably depends on how your cap is designed.

You didn't mention what type of truck you have. Newer trucks have the plastic bed rail caps. For a good seal, it's a good idea to seal under that plastic too.

I like EPDM products. got a bunch of Marvin big-buck windows to stop leaking with HD epdm self adhesive weatherstripping (to thin for bed rail seal).

 

I don't know what size. Isn't your dealer doing the install?

For underneath the bedrail, use sealer from a tube. I used Geocel Proflex.

 

cap dealer. since when did "dealers" do anything but price-point service 'n' sales?

 

dunno. The ones I've worked with always did the install. Also, don't AREs come with a bulb seal, factory installed? The only thing you would have to do is seal under the bedrail caps, if you wanted.

 

I hope they prove my concern unfounded.

Q: do we seal the bed rail side plastic cap in place or remove it?

Remove it to seal it. There are about 8 clips per side holding them in place. It's good to have a trim removal tool or maybe a butter knife to pry it off without breaking the clips. There are good instructions on a thread around here somewhere.
