3rd Gen HID vs LED vs Halogen H11 projector headlights

I was thinking more for headlamps, only compared to other H11's. They're higher output than a standard H11 for less money and more availability than many of the high performance bulbs you've mentioned. At 75w, maybe they're a good balance of more output vs bulb life.

As far as fogs, my T4R comes with H16's (not the H16/5202 type) which are supposedly compatible with H11's. But I've seen fitment of H11's in the H16 socket can vary by brand.

 

I shared this a headlight technology understanding comparison, finding the highest performing bulb is essentially part 2 if you will. I'll update the 2nd post to make it much cleaner once I get the final bulbs in and test them.

Great shot! Any other light source and you would have lost your lights, or had to stop and get out continuously to clear them.

As @Tacosrus points out, there are 2 different Hella H9s. One made cheaply in China, and the other made by one of the worlds leading lighting manufactures (Osram) as part of their performance Hyper series. The Hella H9s covered in this thread are the later. However they are manufactured in South Korea, not Germany.

 

Just installed my GE’s, it’s not dark yet so no observations. I put my spare set in the center console, also put 2 nitrile gloves in with them, that way if I have to change them in a tough situation I don’t get finger prints on them.

 

Do yourself a favor and buy the extensions. Trim the little notch

So just to confirm my summary of the results to date:

For low beams, H11 GE +130’s are the plug and play winner, but only have 150 hours life. The Hella H9’s with modified wiring harness or bulb tab modification are equal or better than the GE’s output and have a ~250 hour life.

Am I missing anything? This thread has enticed me to purchase all of the above. What’s the ultimate high beam and fog plug and pay again?

 

While the Hella Osram Hyper and GEs are similar intensity at the hot spot, outside of the hot spot the Hellas do better, meaning they will have a fuller beam pattern to the sides.

A standard H9 has 250 hour life, the Hellas are not a standard bulb, they are a +30 performance series bulb. Typically this means slightly shorter life, I’d guess they are somewhere between 200-250, but hard to say for certain.

High beams are Hella Osram Hyper H9s as well.

Note the Philips Vision +30 Series H9s actually just out perform the Hellas as a better bulb. But for the very minor performance gain, 6-10%, they cost 2.5x as much and are much harder to come by, needing to be ordered out of the UK. I have not yet found a solid reputable vendor to ship to the US. I bought mine off eBay and they arrived without boxes.

Kind of a hard question to answer, but having both I can give this input.

Currently I have the GE's in because the Phillip 4.3k were on the side of too damn bright. But I haven't had as much run time on the GE's because its turning spring and it isn't dark at 5pm anymore.

However the HID's are the a great choice if your routinely on country/back roads hands down, however when I'm in the city/traffic they are way too bright I'm getting a lot of reflections back from backs of cars, The cutoff is sharp enough and low enough that I don't appear to be bothering drivers at all, but I've had some issues going up hills where that cutoff line shoots way into the air.

If color temperature (whiteness) is more important go with the HID, I loved the 4.3K color and it did really well in wet/rain.

The biggest con on the GE's is the lifespan, and then replacement bulbs can only be mail ordered. I've used HP Hallogen's in other cars and I've always kept spare bulbs, I've found them never to go out on me mid-drive, but it seems just one day you turn on the lights and one or the other is blown out.

 

I must say my high beams do suck on my 2019 TRD 4x4 off road, they provide good side of the road brightness but for extending out in front they suck

I have Auxbeam LED H11 low beams and Fogs... they don't do shit. I'll be going to a high quality HID set up after this non sense. I picked these after Rob Daman on Youtube installed them and gave them a review. I think i have seen a flashlight put out better light than this crap.

Infact I think some of these companies should be investigated for selling this crap

For best reflector based projection, you want large reflectors, like the 2nd Gen. The high beam reflectors on the 3rd Gen are smaller and smaller reflectors do not project distance as efficiently. Using a high efficiency H9 like the Hella Osram Hypers or the Philips Vision +30 will help. I'm also looking at one more solution for improving the high beam performance.

Youtube videos can be extremely deceiving as can photos, and people making videos promoting those products clearly know very little about automotive lighting. As I've mentioned countless times, foreground light photographs better and films better than distance light as does whiter light, which both make for impressive looking photos/videos. Many companies exploit this to convince people to buy their products and will make extensive youtube videos to convince people to do so, as will individual wannabe lighting experts. However the purpose of a headlight is distance illumination, and LEDs in a halogen housing do not project distance which is then counterproductive to their entire purpose. I use professional grade tools to actually measure output to remove the objectivity out of the analysis. But as demonstrated even measurements can be manipulated based on distance, so you need a more wholistic view.

All those LED in halogen headlight/foglight products are illegal to run on public roads. You'll notice they are not sold in auto parts stores because they are not legal for road use. You'll also notice they lack any E1, DOT or SAE compliance stamp, meaning they fail to meet any legal compliance standard for automotive roadway use. The govt already has set lighting compliance standards in place and has laws in place preventing you from running those LED products on the road. I completely 100% agree with you in sentiment. But truth is you were tricked into buying some hack Chinese product and this is still a free country where products like that are allowed to be sold.
