Just checking ...my sales guy was thorough and wanted to demo the various off road features during the end of the test drive

We were in a parking lot, and only moved in a straight line during this.

So we went to 4H no issue. We then came to a stop , shifted to N and went to 4L. We went a few feet forward in 4L. He then activated crawl control for a few feet as well. Lasted a few seconds total for each instance

Pretty sure I’m ok, but I thought you never wanted to do this on pavement.

    Thanks

Totally fine. You don't want to or need to truly drive in 4H or 4L on dry pavement. But in a straight line for a few feet is nothing to worry about. No stress is put on the drive line in a straight line over a short distance. I will sometimes shift to 4H on a long straight side street at 25-30 MPH just to get the transfer case turning and allow the components to exercise and keep everything moving and lubricated well. But I NEVER turn while doing it. Never had a problem.

Yes, it's fine. Sounds like you might have had a salesman more product savvy than most.

The owners manual is available free, online, if you'd like to read up on it as a double check to your internet 'friends'. ;)

Totally good, I am betting he probably knows more about the truck than most of the service advisors.

You’re good. As someone stated above, if you want to exercise the 4wd in the summer months, do a straight line for a small stretch... and in the rain if you’re worried

So far as I know most sales people are dumb when it comes to the vehicle specs/specifics, and operation of basics.. they will know th ebasics, and may know a feature or two..

while I was a mechanic at an auto shop i had the sales person come to me with a 2015 Porsche Cayenne V6 AUTOMATIC that I had done new stock service on. it got new brakes all around (brake service light was on), and tested the battery, checked engine codes, and gave it a clean bill of health..
the salesperson would take a vehicle during the weekends every once in a while to check them out, and to keep the batteries charged up, and verify repairs/get a feel for the car/truck. he came to me maybe 2 weeks after I had done this service saying theres something wrong witht eh car.... it would shut off at every red light he stopped at, and he would re-start the car I thought this was odd.. was'nt sure that this model had start/stop feature.. but I took the keys let it warm up to operating temperature.. and then took it for a short drive.. sure enough.. every full stop I came to it would shut off the engine. and then as soon as I let my foot off the brake the engine would restart, and I could hit the gas and go..

had similar issues when i would ask just about every salesperson when i was looking at vehicles for myself.. I would know more about the tech specs of a vehicle other than what was in bold print on the brochure/sales flyers.. find it funny that not many sales people know much about the product or culture they are selling to.. Woman I bought my tacoma didnt seem knowledgeable about the truck, but at least she told me, "oh just drive it off the curb (truck was on the showroom curb/entry area), that's what it is designed for"..

You should be fine, so long as it is not prolonged use like that. I know it was nerve racking when I used CC for the first time but you got to try it out when getting to know the truck.

Wow where are the guys that are gonna tell you that this can’t and shouldn’t be done. And that you should be given a new truck because the sales person did and not you?

Kills me when when people say you can’t drive drive a truck in 4wd on paved roads. Plenty of people do it all the time in the winter months around where I live. Including myself. Infact my truck is in 4wd as we speak and I even pulled it that way in out of my driveway when I snowblowed this morning. And it didn’t blow up

Why can't you use 4wd on dry pavement? Plenty of full time 4wd vehicles out there. I had a full time 4wd v8 grand Cherokee that would pass anything on the highway except a gas station. Neither differential on the jeep or the tacoma is locking. So if not identical, the front and rear differential are the same in function. Only difference is the transfer case. Correct me if i am wrong but that's just a combination of ring gears like those in a differential. If you can't use it on paved roads what do you do for patchy ice? Shift in and out 4wd every time you get to a slick spot and hope you see them all? Or ride around in 2wd and hope you don't put your 4wd truck in a ditch because you were scared to hurty the transfer case? Not being condescending but this makes no sense to me.

If there is white stuff covering the tire tracks in the road then I am in 4wd hi, no exceptions, i'm not in an e-peen contest to see who can stay in 2wd the longest in inclement weather like some guys. You are only going to bind up 4wd in a situation where you are doing a full 90 degree turn on dry pavement (Parking lot, tight right or left turns at stopsigns for example)

Full time 4wd vehicles have center diffs. Part time do not. Thats the difference.

4x4 is not the same as AWD. https://www.edmunds.com/car-buying/awd-vs-4wd-whats-the-difference-and-which-to-choose.html
