I have a 97 tacoma with the 3.4l i have a 800w amp running to 2 12’s and the lights dim already. Not too bad. I am upgrading to 2 new 12’s and the amp will be running 2000w rms with 0 gauge wire. I’ve heard about the big 3 upgrade and also a capacitor. Which should do to take a load off of the electrical system?

The caps will provide immediate relief for the dimming problem. Upgrading the cables will provide long term relief to your electrical system overall.

If you're dimming already, you may need to upgrade the charging system. You can probably get away with one really good battery or 2 more standard batteries (on the existing system) though as long as you aren't drawing too much from the alternator. Big 3 will probably need to be done. Then again, I have 1200W available (600 to sub) and no dimming on my 1st gen using all Knu Kolossus OFC 4 ga and a stock charging system.

Poor grounds can cause dimming. As can weak points in the cabling/terminations. But going to 2kW on a sub stage will mean some upgrades.

As far as caps go, they're generally not worth the effort and expense. They can help with quick peaks, but a capacitor is just a capacitor. It stores and releases energy quickly. It will not store enough for sustained power. Batteries are the answer. And if you rock out hard all day long, an alternator upgrade will be needed.
