Anyone trading their Taco for a Tesla Model 3?

You could always put a trailer hitch on the Tesla...

 

One could also put a hitch on a Mazda 3 or 6 and not have to worry about adventures in Tesla auto body repair.

Anyone in this thread making fun of the Tesla lineup hasn’t done their research. They kick some serious ass, and are far more capable than the electric car stereotype. And people are seriously loving their Tesla vehicles.

As far as the OP’s question, if you don’t need a truck anymore and you have access to charging at home/work like you say, I think it’s a good trade. Whether people like it or not, the days of the traditional gasoline vehicles are limited and you’ll have to switch eventually, either now or in 50 years.

I personally would love a Tesla if I didn’t do so much traveling over the range limits for the vehicles (I drive over 400 miles every couple weeks to visit my fiancé), plus I like the utility of a truck and the comfort of the existing and proven technology. Teslas are still new and have their drawbacks, as all new ventures do. Plus, Musk has already said they plan on a truck project in the coming years, so that may check both boxes for you!

Trade a truck from a brand with great reliability/durability/resale for an electric car that has poor fit and finish and poor resale??? Good luck 4 wheeling in that Tesla.

I sold my 2016 Taco for a Model 3 SR+ about a year ago and have loved every second of owning the Tesla. I do miss having a truck but I have saved so much money on travel and being able to have the instant torque and speed of the tesla has me really wanting to gut a M3 and Tacoma and make a EV Tacoma with Tesla parts. I figure it wouldn't be THAT hard if I had a welder (person not just the machine). mount the cameras and sensors in the same spot and have autopilot too. I originally got the Tesla because I though they were cool and I'm a tech guy so it makes sense to have a Tesla, but I love autopilot way to much and I have to have it with any other main vehicle that I drive. The Rivian R1T looks like the way to go but it needs tesla software/autopilot and supercharging network.


Edit: I've just read through some responses on this form post and y'all are toxic asf and uneducated, but so is every other conversation about EV vs fossil fuels. i want a diesel Tacoma as much as y'all, chill out

 

That's what I was about to mention--for those who want a truck and EV, Rivian has the most compelling prototype. But they have a long way to go in terms of production scale and infrastructure. Range is about 300 miles, though the fact that the entire underbelly of the truck is one big skid plate (no differential hanging down) seems potentially useful off the highway.

 

When I was looking for a new pickup truck there were only two options. Tacoma or Rivian.

I eventually (obviously) went with the Tacoma despite a reservation for a Rivian. EV trucks aren't quite there yet for me. The price was a killer. Now I saw just the other day that in the first month of production they are averaging less than two trucks a day. It would be a long time before any truck I ordered would be delivered. By then, I feared, the big automakers would already be advancing past Rivian.

I'll keep this Tacoma for a long time. I imagine in the next decade when I'm maybe for a new one the scale for EVs and prices will be evened out and the options will be plenty.

 

Same here. I'm buying a Tacoma that I plan to keep for 10+ years. Rivian looks neat, but it's a promise wrapped in a hypothetical at this point. If Rivian or the big makers do something cool in 3-5 years, the resale value of the Tacoma I hope would be good enough to enable a switch.

 

Ford F-150 lighting. Get the benefits of a truck and an electric vehicle from a company that actually makes trucks for truck people. Tesla and Rivian are not marketed for people that actually get out and use their vehicles or tow, they are trying to attract people who otherwise would not have bought a truck but wanted something to match their MAC and iPhone.

What makes you say this?

The Rivian has more horsepower and more towing capacity than the Lightning. The Rivian has more clearance and better angles than the Lighting and has better fording numbers as well. The Rivian is the more capable truck. For those that "actual get out there and use their vehicles or tow" they would be better off with the Rivian.

The Lightning is definitely going for the "everyman" demographic but that's more because of the price than the capability in my opinion. The Rivian seems to be more of the "lifestyle" demographic you're referring to.

RIVIAN is directly targeted towards offroading, adventure, camping, etc. They even call it an adventure vehicle.

My coworker just sold his V8 4Runner for a Model 3, he picks it up on Monday. But he also has a Tundra so I only give him a little bit of crap about it.

 

Well if its a 2022 Tundra it gets higher MPG than a Tacoma.
