Hi I have a 2004 Tacoma X-tra cab and I am having a issue with the dome light not coming on when it is set in door position, bur comes on when switched to ON position with the switch, basically I am wondering what could cause my dome light to not come on when the doors are opened and it is on door position but comes on when switched to ON position up on the dome light. I have checked fuses and cant find any burnt out. only thing I do know is previous owner disabled the DRLs by cutting a white with green stripe wire off the DRL box, I was told that that should not effect the dome light not coming on when doors are opened. any areas I could check or advice would be much appreciated. thanks a bunch.

Do you get the door open indicator, when you open the door? If you don't, that could be a bad door switch, making it think the door is always closed.

Did you check the contacts on the switch? I had this problem on my 84 and it just took a bit of fiddling with the contacts. If you have a 12 volt test light or a multimeter you can check for power as well. Last but not least it could be a bad door switch.

Welcome to the list- does the dome light not work when either door is opened? The door pin switch is a grounding switch. When the door is open it will ground the circuit. So I have seen these door switches get corroded and not ground however it would be unlikely the would both go out at the same time.

I understand by now you’ve resolved the problem. I’m posting this because it’s a step by step guide to troubleshooting and resolving dome light issues for first gens, and it may help others. This video is for a first gen tundra but I have an 04 Tacoma and his setup is the exact same as mine.
