I am skeptical about legitimacy too but don’t wanna chance it since my truck came stock with non synthetic. And I honestly have no clue how long the trans has gone without a change so I don’t know if I want to risk it

Just do a drain and fill. Not a flush.

i have no idea what was in mine before cuz i got it used at 210k. i went with syn engine oil at first oil change, no leaks. went syn in the diffs about a year ago, no leaks. Trans... no idea when mine was done, you can do a full flush without issues if you do it a certain way. my buddy's work uses a bladder system, not a pump, so it just uses operating pressure to push new fluid into the system and it removes the old fluid. which in my opinion is the best way/safest way. i personally think the problems come when someone or a shop uses a pump method that might flow at a higher rate then the factory transmission pump, loosening up debris.

I was trying to find the thread but I had read a while back that some guy used royal purple during a gear break in on a regear. Blew up two diffs. But who knows what that person did. For me it was cheaper to get the Lucas or amsoil lol.

guy probably did something stupid. also, they recommend Dyno and a thicker oil when doing the break in. ECGS recommends dino in all their diffs and just change more frequently.

Yeah I was going to do the method where you drain the pan, fill the pan exact amount you drained, remove the ATF radiator inlet and start the engine, remove a quart, stop the engine, add a quart, then repeat turning on, drain, turn off, add till you’ve let out about 12 quarts I think it was.

I’ll just see how my fluid looks and act accordingly to that.

yeah it seems like a pretty full proof method. would be a lot easier with two people, so one person can watch how much fluid is coming out and the other can sit in the truck and shut off the engine in time to make sure you don't dry out the pump

You can pay $10 and get the amsoil membership. Pay less for their products, worth it if you order enough

Yah I’d probably do it with a buddy to relieve frustration. Wrenching alone blows sometimes.

I bought a case of 75-90 a really long time ago. Needless to say I am still trying to get through it.

I do my oil changes every 5k km so I usually just get what ever synthetic that’s on sale.

Dood, the numero uno thing you want to prevent and prescribe for...let me type that in English, with affect because this is that important...The NUMBER ONE thing you want to prevent RIGHT NOW is the strawberry milkshake. I've had one on a 97 t4r, which is essentially the same drivetrain as you. Trust me, it will ruin your day. It will ruin your truck. It will ruin your childhood memories. You made mention earlier (likely inadvertently) about the tranny cooler. Do it now, do it first, borrow the 2 hundy if you have to or do your best meth head impression and blow a guy to get the brownies for the independent tranny cooler funds. Get the two cooling systems independent of each other.

If you do not, and you get a strawberry milkshake in the future, you will recall this advice...and you will reconcile to yourself..."hmm, I shoulda listened to that old fvck on TW, and blown that transsexual for that 2 hundy"

    It's THAT important

Yup, any one. It will be a brand name and it will do. It's snowing and I don't feel like going out to look under the hood of my 99 Runner. Just get one. It's the first thing I did to it before even plating it.

Read multiple sources already saying that the Tacoma’s don’t get the pink milkshake like the t4rs do. I’ll be adding one but not in a hurry to do it, I’m also going to replace my radiator and doing a coolant flush cause I’m sure there’s some nice gunk in it.

Hmm, I'm not sure what kind of magikal aura surrounds the 3.4L AT in a Tacoma that utilizes the same cooling strategy (plumbed thru the radiator) than the same 3.4L AT radiator cooled tranny of the 3rd gen T4R lacks...but that is some awesome shit that if you could harness and bottle, you'd make a dollar.
