The recalls would be sent out to owners that lived in salt states. But you bring up a good point QG7227. People travel into those states, move there but, looking at those frame pics...it doesn't appear to have the undercoating sprayed on it. I had received my notification in 08,09 if I am correct and had to have it done before Dec 31st 2010 to be eligible for the 15 year frame warranty. Mine ran out last Nov. on my 03 and I appear to be lucky so far. My frame is still solid as a rock, even in the problem areas of frame. Its been in Pa it's whole life.

Thats what it looks like. Oh lost my spare last year, My boy used it to drive to his job and it flew off somewhere along the way. I got a recall for that but never took it in.

If someone offered me 13K for mine I may...MAY! consider it. That said I wouldn't pay 13K for a 1st gen. Not even mine... 8-9k max, unless you want it really bad...

I do not recall ever getting any formal notification, only heard about it 2nd hand in early 2o11, had to darn near beg the Toyota service advisor to schedule it and they pay for inspection, they look at me like whuh frame problems? ... a relative had a '98 4cy single cab (they bought used in 2oo4) inspected before me and the hammer perforated the back parts, Toyota had to buy it and crush it

i think i need to approach whomever in the Big Shiny Office and tell them I need assistance in cleaning and re-coating my underbody to preserve it, being the original & dedicated owner, I think they owe me as much lol seriously though, they know these problems and may have not even fixed it so the 2nd and 3rd gens have no issues, I hear some are having problems?

I just bought low mileage 2003 Ext Cab last year and a low mileage 2002 DC last month. I looked a long time for low mileage (nationwide searches) and good condition. I don’t think 13k is that high, especially on a rustfree, solid frame. Yes, it’s on the high end for sure, but it’s not insane. It all boils down to how bad you want one and how long you’ll keep it. As you’ve already stated, you’re not in love with it and wouldn’t plan to keep it long, so spending this kind of money wouldn’t make much sense to me. There are deals out there (8-9 is a steal) for low mileage ones, but they aren’t always clean and well maintained. There’s a reason these values have held steady, or even increased over the past 5-10 years. I look at them as an investment in some ways. Get a good one and make it last.

I think we are also possibly running into the dilemma with the interested non-enthusiasts out there that have heard of these LEGENDS that the latest Taco commercials are 'hinting' at?
They look at a new one priced at 40k or more for the all-you-can have, these trucks are not compact anymore, you can't reach stuff in the middle of the bed without a stepstool or small ladder or being 7' tall lol, then they see that the 1st gens have a great history of longevity and they want a piece of this legend, no? Then, if they meet the right 'salesperson' they may just pay a little premium to what today is deemed overpriced on the gotta have it, gotta have it, or there are no more to be had with the unknown limited supply?
I would be a bit skittish to put mine up for sale in my area because what if somebody bites? do i then reneg my offer for sale? only way I would probably sell is if I noticed something seriously wrong developing (and be truthful about it to interested parties) or could totally no longer drive a 5sp MT because of leg problems or what have you.

    is this still for sale?

13k won't get you very far towards a brand new truck these days..... I could see maybe 11k for this one. It's really up to you. How much do you want to spend? If you can take it to a mechanic and it checks out you've got a good truck. Someone will buy it. If you wanna keep it for 1 years might be worth it. If only for a year or 2 maybe not. Figure out your budget, and stick to it.

Just seems like 13k is way high. I think 10k is the max. The seller reject 8-9k

Then it’s too high for your needs, there are cheaper options. For the people looking to keep a good one for a long time, it’s within the range.

I have a vehicle stipend from my company so my 3rd gen is being paid for from that but man the miles are killing it.

I’ll work enough OT to cover the cost of the 1st gen no problem.

At any price, its still a 16 year old vehicle with 16 year old vehicle problems. Miles are not the whole story - aging rubber (coolant hoses, vacuum hoses, brake lines, etc) and aging plastic (connectors, interior pieces, wiring insulation), can all be a problem and probably will be as it continues to age. 13k seems really steep.

If it isn't too much of a pain, it might be worth going in person and going over it with a magnifying glass to knock down the price for literally any issue you find.

how are they 'killing it'? is it non-highway miles, lots of stop and go city driving?

I’d say 50/50. A lot of stop and go between locations on the project. 30 mile commute to the job.

do you know if it is the original clutch? if not you might talk them down the cost of 'potential' repair job on that

this is a problem with used vehicles ... don't know where they've been OR who's been in it
