We got a bit of snow yesterday, and I didn’t clear the ice off of the tss sensor. I was just driving along, with no one in front of me, and the BRAKE! Message popped up and slammed my brakes on. On an icy road. Thankfully I only slid a little bit and there was no one driving next to me. But it was enough that I’m going to see if it can be disabled when I take it in for service next month. Just a heads up to anyone who lives somewhere that gets snow.

You can disable it, 2017 and older have no TSS. (Boulderite 2004-2012)

Wow, that sucks. It’s all about where you are I guess.

When I first bought this thing I was dead set that the TSS is a bullshit nanny system I wouldnt want to use. Now a couple weeks later, I’m a big fan. Works great! Just takes more workload off me in traffic. Of course I live in NM now so dont have to worry about ice and snow anymore. Maybe that’s the difference?

Why would you slam on your brakes with no one in front of you?

My TSS BRAKE! has come on and didn’t apply brakes. Didn’t know that it did that.

I'd change your sensitivity to "low" and looks like you put on an after market grill... did you have Toyota re-calibrate the radar when you installed it?? If not I'd get that done ASAP moving the sensor even a few inches, changing radar cover and/or changing the angle by a few degrees can throw it all off.

Either way I'd get in the habit of disabling it in inclement weather. I don't have TSS on my truck but my other car has a similar system and I turn it off even in rain I think we're still years away from these systems being able to work in bad weather there's just too many variables.

I'm glad I have a 2016. I was wondering how tss would do in snow or ice. Glad you didn't crash op.

My first time driving the Tacoma in the snow, couldn't figure out why it was going all over the place even though I was going slow and had the wheel steady.

I noticed that some light would come on with a noise in the truck whenever it would go all over the place. Can't remember which specific one but it seemed to be one of those safety systems.

So ended up pressing the button (the button with the car with wavy lines) near the rear view mirror that looked like it corresponded with the dashboard light to turn it off and the Tacoma started to drive and handle as expected. It looks like pressing that button also disables some other systems like the precollision system as well.

I think it's the trac off button And when I got home and did a quick search online, I think it was recommended to turn off that feature when driving in the snow. Been meaning to look in the manual to see what that button is actually called.

Anyways, unless another member says there's a reason not to, I would probably press that button to disable the systems whenever needing to drive through snow or wintery conditions from now on.

Mine has never braked for me. Though it has gone off on a clear day with no one in front of me.
