They did give me a token for a free small coffee and cookie at the Subway Sandwich shop they had inside the dealership. I guess they have to make money somewhere.

Do you guys have any idea what kind of markup is in furniture? Electronics? My best friend is a contractor he remodels bathrooms for like $25k a pop and each one costs him like $6k but people LOVE him for it. Do you guys jump on forums and rant about dentists upselling useless "specialized" $80 mouthwash that costs them literally $5?

I own a coffee shop and we roast our own beans so my cost per cup is like <.20 cents... but when I sell it for $3 no one negotiates and no one calls me evil despite a 1,400% markup.

Dealerships on average operate on low single digit margins, they invest MILLIONS into their stores: infrastructure, employees, flooring costs, tools, permits, taxes, advertising, utilities etc etc etc. All to make like 3% margins. I tip my hat to anyone willing to invest that much in a fairly risky business, dealerships fail ALL THE TIME so of course people that invest in them expect a return... but when they make a profit everyone calls them evil for it

Yeah there's some shady things that go on in the car business, but thats true about literally ANY business... so why are car dealerships so different?

The throttle bottle cleaning is just adder they put in the tank at my dealer.

I had them say its 35 to install an air filter. When I asked how my install vs theirs is different she said we have to make sure it's done correctly.

To be fair we are on an automobile forum...but I do agree other industries are equally shady.

I came into the dealership I purchased my truck to buy a couple accessories. One of the accessories was a bed extender and out of curiosity I asked the service department how much it cost to have it installed. The service employee had to ask another service employee beside him how much it cost for installation. And he quoted me at $250 for installation. To my shock I said the installation cost more than the accessory. They were justifying it by saying that they had to remove the rear lights and all that...I looked at him and just thanked them and walked away.

I’m sitting in the lobby at the dealer waiting for my annual inspection to finish.

The service guy came in and said to the customer next to me he suggests he gets the throttle body cleaning service for $199. Also, cleaning battery terminals for $30.

I guess it’s cheaper than the $600 front brake pads they quoted a customer the last time I was here.

Hopefully the guy that they suggested that to didn't have a 3rd gen or similar year vehicle...I cleaned my 04's throttle body for the first time last year and it hardly needed it, probably could've gone another several years.
