True but I'm looking for more info to read and that will lead to me asking questions. Right now I don't know enough to know what I don't know.

I just stumbled into this thread, a great space. Glad to see so many taco folks active on the bands. Been enjoying making friends through HF long path DX for around 35 years from the remote shoreline of SE Maui. Big monobanders up 110' with a good ocean takeoff from the slopes of Mt Haleakala work wonders.

Glad to be a new member of the forum. Should be picking up my 19 DCSB tomorrow and am already trying to figure out where to mount my ICOM IC-2730a. This, by the way, is a great radio. I wouldn't mind having one with APRS on it, but for what I do this radio can't be beat!

A useful discussion on this thread would be about antenna types and their related ground plane optimization when mounted in different ways.
Angle of radiation (high is good for mountainous terrain, low for flatlands) differs for quarter wave, half wave, 5/8 wave types.
The antenna element is only half of the antenna, the ground plane (truck sheet metal) is the other half, and symmetry in the ground plane is important for good radiation patterns.
Happy to chime in if anyone has a question; sure there are plenty other old timers around too.

    In other news....

I finished my Ham in a can build.

FT-8800R with a 12ah battery. Works great. My wife is planning on doing some vinyl markings on the outside to give it more character.

That is a Diamond Slim Gainer AZ507RSP.

I was using it on my truck for APRS, but it has been sitting in the garage for the last few months. I am going to look for a stubby that I can keep in the can. I also have a mag mount for it.
