Outdoorsman windoors and dogs

I’m ordering an ARE overland shell for my truck and will likely be keeping my dog in it when traveling with her.

I was wondering if anyone had any insight into the effectiveness of the windoor vents versus the stationary window vents in keeping the shell cool and circulated. I know the stationary windows have bigger vents, but I really like the idea of the windoors for access and they DO have the middle section as a vent. Anyone have two windoors and keep dogs in the back, and wish they did it different? Thoughts in general?

 

I was told that the Windoors do not come on the Overland shells. The spray on rhino coat interferes with the Windoors somehow. I oridinally ordered the Overland and wanted the Windoors and that's what they told me. I ordered the V series which is the same shell as the Overland, but without the rhino spray, so I could get the Windoors. Most of the research I've done found that almost everyone who didn't get the Windoors, wishes they did.

 

Thanks for the thoughts, but I believe overland can have the windoors since the rhino coat is more of a trim than a total coat. The ARE catalog actually has one with a windoor on the cover. I wound up ordering it with the windoors through my local dealer who didn’t mention any issue and I don’t believe there’s been any issue with it on the ARE side, but I’ll post if that turns out to be the case for posterity's sake.

Fingers crossed that the ventilation is still solid enough for the pup!

 

Should help if you open the front slider, too - assuming it will have one.

 

You should go on ARE's website and perform the "Build Your Own" tab and see if it lets you choose the Windoors as an option for your truck. I have a 2019 Tacoma, Double Cab, 5'3" bed, and it's not even an option to choose Windoors when you're choosing what kind of side doors you'd like. I'm not sure of which body or year you have. Not trying to be combative, just looking out for a fellow Tacoma owner.

 

I just tried building one on the long bed and it looks like you can get them on the long bed.

 

I had the same questions when i got my Snugtop Rebel. It's true that the windoors don't allow as much ventilation as the traditional sliding windows. But I think windoors look better and are good for access. Because my dogs often stay in the back I need a good amount of ventilation. I compromised and got a windoor on one side and traditional slider with pet screens on the other side.

One thing I've thought about doing to increase airflow is mount a 12 volt RV fan to the small windoor opening...

I have fixed sliders in my topper. We're in Florida so it does get warm back there. Our Calahoula hound seems ok riding back there. At first I frequently checked on him on trips. No extreme panting or stress noted. I did hang a large gerbil/pet water feeder back there for him. On longer interstate trips he gets upscale treament to ride in back seat. My wife feels it's too lonely to ride "in the back".
