I never had issues just leaving the rear tire on the tailgate.

Thanks guys. The guys I ride with locally are saying "maybe" and it confirms what I guess the sense is here. Seems like everyone think's it would be right at the limit. I looked at the technical payload specs that say my DCSB has a max payload of 1155lb. Subtracting ~800lb for these two dual sports leaves 355lb for gas, some gear, and two passengers, so I will probably be 50-100lb over the payload limit for 700 miles.

I think I have to get a trailer for one of the bikes.

I run it up the ramp by myself. I don’t have a wide ramp so riding it up is not an option. But I bet the tailgate would support the weight to ride up. I’m a taller guy so I could run it up while still being able to hold handles then I jump onto truck bed and pull. I’d recommend an extra person. Loading it alone is scary. Also make sure you strap your ramp down to tow hitch area.

Just went to the track with two bikes and gear in my longbed. The sportbike rear almost clears the gate, and the mini can fit with gate closed. Takes a lot longer to strap bikes down and load gear in between.

I fit a r1200gs WC in the back with no issues in my 13 X-runner. Just some noise from the tail gate when u roll it over it...cracking popping no bending

ProTaper straps are threaded through the bars (like If it was forward facing) but ran to the rear stock D rings. Just have to find the straightest-ish' path down past the two other bikes swing arms and wheels. We also threw two other Ratchet straps anchoring the crf250l's pegs back to the @At The Helm tie down bracket at the front of the truck. I threw one additional ratchet strap through front wheel of the Honda to keep the front wheel from shifting. It's the Camo colored strap, may be able to see in photos

I am in this same dilemma. I have a 450X and always hauled it in my old access cab diagonally, no problems. But a few times I hauled another bike, and my tailgate got some rock chips in it from being down. But just bought a limited with the 5 foot bed. Need room for the bike and gear. I have a hitch mounted hauler, a good one, with 600 lb capacity, not one of those cheap POS units. I think I will put the bike on that, so can still put gear in the bed. Pros: bike will be easier to load, its lower. Gear will fit in bed without being packed. Wont need to carry a ramp (ramp is included/attached to the bike rack). Wont need to buy a tailgate net. Wont need to drive with tailgate down, no rock chips. Cons. Extra weight in a weird way, all the way at the back of the truck. Not quite as secure, if your bike falls over in the bed, you dont lose the bike on the road!

yes, front and rear factory flaps on gen 2 and front and rear factory flaps on gen 3, all with factory sized tires and wheels. Must be from gravel kicking up on the drive to the riding areas.

I finally broke down and bought a 10' Alumina trailer a couple years ago after 25 years of hauling bikes in little pickups. Same kind of moment when I finally bought a motorcycle lift, why the hell did I wait so long?

I've been hauling bikes for over 20+ years. 2 sport bikes or 2 dirt bikes in the back of 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen Tacomas (never a worry about weight on the tailgate) never a single problem. 4 straps per bike is a must in my book. I've had one strap fail, and with 4 at least you have a margin for error.

I prefer the bed of the truck WAAAYY over a trailer (I also have a trailer and have used it plenty). I can load and tie down 2 bikes in the back of my truck by myself in about 10 minutes. When I was roadracing, an enclosed trailer was nice just to keep the bike and all the multitude of track gear/tools clean/dry/locked up. But everything rides so much smoother in the truck bed, trailers bounce a lot. And pulling a trailer just give you more chances for a flat tire, bad wheel bearing, hitch issues, wiring issues, etc. Elimitating the trailer completely just removes all those concerns.
