Apologize if this is in the wrong place or if there is already a forum for this.

I have a 2017 Tacoma SR5, bought it from a friend who bought it from dealership. When he bought it, he bought TRD pro wheels and had the dealership put them on. When they switched them, they said that the old TPMS sensors would not fit TRD pro rims. He didn’t want to pay the extra money so he didn’t have any put in.

I’m tired of seeing the tire pressure light on my dash so I called 2 local dealerships to see about buying them and got 2 quotes of $587 and $540. I don’t really want to shuck that out right now.

Just wondering if anybody has any ideas or knows where I can get it done cheaper. The sensors were $85 a piece for 4, and labor was over $200. From what I understand this is due to them having to program them, etc. I thought about buying the sensors new and finding a tire place around here to install them cheaper, or maybe even finding some used sensors (any issues with getting used?)

Thanks for all ideas, comments, etc

You can get them cheaper. Keep and eye out on the marketplace here for a known working set. If you can wait, I would suggest installing them the next time you need tires.

I'd also like to add, when I was looking for a set of winter rims I managed to find a complete set locally with tires and TPMS sensors.

All I had to do was swap the tires over to winters. No programming was necessary.

That is what the dealership told me about taking the TPMS out of my steel wheels and putting them in the alloy wheels I bought on Ebay. I never gave the dealership a dime and had a local repair shop swap everything out. Below is what the dealership wanted to red rod me. LOL! (Not counting labor!)

    4 tire pressure sensors - $82.75 each x 4 = $331.00

    4 tire pressure fit kits - $8.36 each x 4 = $33.44

    4 aluminum wheels - $250.00 x 4 = $1,000.00

    4 center caps - $19.31 each x 4 = $77.24

    24 lug nuts - $3.76 each x 24 = $90.24

Cost me $60 labor at the local repair shop. $569 w/shipping for the alloy wheels. And a $20 set of lug nuts on Ebay.

That’s ridiculous. I’ve heard of several people getting ripped off by the dealerships. Another reason I was hesitant to have them do it, especially when they told me what they were charging. I almost wonder if they just told my friend the old sensors wouldn’t fit, just to get more money out of him

So what happened to the original rims, sensors, and lug nuts?

Sure that is exactly what they did. Allot of people don't question dealerships and pay the price. I'm a poor man so that tactic don't work on me.

Yeah same here. What little money I do have, I’m not just gonna give to a dealership without trying every other option first LOL

Buy some generic sensors, be like 100 for four. Have them put in, maybe 20 bucks a wheel/tire.

Will this work? I don’t know much about them, but from what I read I thought they had to programmed using Toyota programming so I assumed that they would have to be Toyota sensors? Again, first time I’ve dealt with this so I’m uneducated besides the few things I’ve read on it

I added them to my Amazon wish list for when these quit working in about 5 years. I'll probably try to live with the warning light on the dash though. May get a monkey face sticker to put over it like the lady in the Jiffy Lube commercial on t.v.

Just had tires installed on my new TRD Pro 17” wheels & had Discount Tires add new sensors so I can swap out during winter months. $45 per sensor/installed.

My stealership wanted $90 per sensor. Didn’t stick around long enough to find out how much they would’ve charged for installation.
