What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

FINALLY got around to replacing the bearings in my Kings...was super easy, don't know why I waited so long. No more squeaking and clunking at last

 

Finished making the wood bumper template. (Yes I didn’t finish the other side because I didn’t want to wast time cutting the same angles and gluing it all together). Anyhow next will be to draw it up on a CAD program and start putting it all together. Here are some progress pictures.

 

Looking a lot like a bumper that was popular at one time but went out like Pelfrey built. You should sell the CAD file so others can do the same.

Here is the way I attached the frame brackets.

Also fabricated tabs to mount at the (former) tailgate latches. Makes for added insurance on the posts and makes for some pretty beefy bed stiffeners.

I’m getting a bounce from the rear while braking, seems to only do it when going from about 45 to 35. No other weird vibes. tried balancing tires but still the same. Bought new drums thinking they might be warped, still no difference. Does it unloaded, and does to some extent while hauling a trailer. Only thing in the bed is a medium sized triangle tool box loaded up and on the very back. I can see one of the rear shocks is leaking, but I don’t have any bouncing other than when braking. I’m stumped...and getting tired of the bounce.

 

Whats the point in making a cad file? Cnc plasma cutting all the pieces? Other than that I cant think of a good reason. Id just trace what you got onto some sheet metal then start torching/plasma cuttering the pieces out.

Wheres them shackles I sold ya?

 

Maybe your e-brake is interfering somehow?

Maybe the brake proportioning valve? When lifted you need a spacer.

Can’t believe I didn’t think of this before. It’s probably the slip yoke. I had a sorta similar issue and greasing it made it better. It’s not 100% so I’ll proably end up pulling it out and manually greasing it so it’s completely covered.

Then I’m going to add a traction bar. That should completely kill the axel wrap and prevent the thud. I found a fab kit for $200. Much better than Budbuilt at damn near $600 shipped.

 

Yes reason for cad file is in cutting them on a water jet.

 

I thought for sure I was going to get some bashing because a lot of people seem to think JBA suck compared to DT. But I’ve seen a decent amount of issues (leaks, shitty welds) with the DT as well. One dude said “I could piss better welds than DTs” on another forum.

They’re almost identical. Except for the JBAs are stainless ceramic coated and DTs are mild steel ceramic coated. DT also mentions equal length. But I’m not so sure that would make a big difference considering they’re short tube. JBA obviously made an effort to get them as close to equal length as possible. I’m also a bit skeptical on DTs “equal length” claim as they have to cross over the trans anyway. It’s proably a wash in the end.

 

It’s possible...I can’t remeber if I had the bounce before my 4wd conversion or not...but I suppose that wouldn’t matter because I kept the back half of my 2wd shaft. I’ll give it a shot and see. I haven’t long greased it, but as you said I may have to manually grease it and use the Ford grease as @Timmah! and others here have recommended. But with no other kinds of vibes or bounces, would the slip yoke really cause that?

 

I’d much rather pay someone to CNC them for precise clean cuts. Cutting that all out manually would suck ass.

When you greas the zerk it’s probaly going to take a lot of grease. Keep your eye on the slip yoke though. When it begins to move stop.

 

Little bit more progress before calling it an evening.

 

Got the upper cover and fan bracket removed. Looks like the water pump was starting to weep a bit. Got to it just in time...





Need to get a bigger breaker bar for the crank pulley bolt removal tomorrow.
