Muffler heat shield

Hey forum,

On my truck I have a Magnaflow muffler which is quite wide and close to the frame and I think that the heat from it helps the rust to grow faster. Close by I found a rust bubble which I was able to remove and over paint.
Now my idea was to put some wrap heat shield around the muffler similar to this one

My question is now how good this will help to keep the heat away from the frame and where the heat will go when I basically trap it inside the muffler?

doubt that's causing the frame to rust any faster, by the time the exhaust gasses get to the muffler there is not too much heat that would be causing the paint or powder coat to bubble up. what I'd do is take a thermography camera or IR gun and shoot it to confirm your suspicion first before spending money on the heat shield. To answer your question where the heat would go, the muffler would be hotter inside so the exhaust gasses would exit the tailpipe at a higher temperature.

 

Yesterday my exhaust heat shield (above catalytic converter area) fell off when I pulled out of work parking lot. Was having high winds of 60mph gusts. Been hearing something rattling lately until this happened. The heat shield closest to muffler was also loose and ready to tear off to. Bought some 1/4 x 1 1/4 SS washers and and that seemed to work for that shield. Secured it much better with the large washers.

The shield that fell off will be a little more of a problem since the stud & nut (3 total) farthest forward above catalytic converter I can't budge loose? Plus can't get a socket on i.e. 10mm. Could only use box end wrench. The other two rearward nuts came off with no effort after spraying with penetrating oil. Will buy some more washers and another nut and that should suffice, I hope.

Toyota dropped the ball in my opinion with these flimsy heat shields. Junk......
