    I respectfully disagree.

I take issue with it because if no one does then it becomes acceptable. Once that happens more and more people will do it and at that point, where does it become unacceptable? I don’t like being out and seeing the landscape with someone’s initials, or handle etched into anything. Trees, rocks, sandstone, etc.

Something I heard a while ago that still comes to mind when I see stuff like this. “The standard you walk by becomes the standard you accept.” I for one, am unaccepting of this.

Do you remember the guys that pushed the rock off the cliff... They were little fish
Or the guy who drove around a gate to get to a fishing spot....

It's hard to explain ethical obligations to someone who hasn't been around long enough to comprehend.

Nope, I definitely don’t spend my fair share of time on the mountain, don’t talk to me like you know me.

All I’m saying is, it was no environmental harm. Yes he’s a dipshit. But would I make a post that will inevitably bring out the guys who DM him personal threats and try to take down his business over something carved in a rock? No. These turn into witch hunts and it’s far beyond the original “damage” done.

I will say that from what i know of you, you're a good dude, and are quite the avid outdoorsman.

Which is why your lack of concern in this situation perplexes me as well.

Kinda getting derailed here into a pissing match.

The point is in today's day and age, anti-ohv and tree hugging groups alike are using anything they can get their hands on to publicly shame and deface responsible offroaders. We are losing thousands of acres and trails a year WITHOUT the help of guys like Mateo showing pictures of him carving a stupid IG handle into a rock.

Is it a big deal environmentally? In retrospect, no. It is stupid? Yes. we can all agree on that. Now those groups have more proof of irresponsible offroaders defacing land. Regardless if its historic or not. Years of trucks and ohv passing through this area will do far more damage than a little etching.

    But it was stupid.
    And he posted his stupidity.
And there will be backlash from responsible offroaders
And there could be backlash from the anti-offroad groups
And there could be eventual closures.

Hes an idiot. Hes not helping the cause. His business should/ might suffer from his poor decisions.

Move on. Let him resolve it.

I was at the Grand Canyon this last summer with my son. We were walking along the south rim and were near a point where you could walk out and up to the rim. I watched a mid teens kid crouched down and look around then proceed to roll a basketball sized rock of and over the edge. I stared in disbelief for a minute as my son turned to look at me. I watched the kid grab another rock and proceed to check to see if anyone was watching. I then proceeded to yell out an “OI, don’t roll rocks off the cliff”. He popped right up, looked right at me and turned to walk away. I think I said it loudly enough about 4 dozen people turned to see what was happening. I watched him walk towards what I assumed was his father with his head down and a really disappointed look on his dad’s face.

I don’t know if anyone else was paying attention or just didn’t care. But what was important to me was my son knowing I didn’t accept that behavior and for him to know that it’s not ok.
