Carrier bearing drop for 3" lift

Hello all I have a 3" lift on my 2004 Tacoma 4wd, I will be replacing the carrier bearing soon. I was told I need to do a drop for my carrier bearing has anyone done this and what method did you use? thanks

 

I am also doing the same thing, however I never heard of this were did you gather your intel from?

well when looking at the drive shaft there was a lot of angle towards the center due to the lift? I see they sell carrier bearing drop kits for 2005 and up tacomas

 

Actually now that I think about it logically that make sense...there are many vendor on this sight I would ask them since a lot of them have shops and could stear you in the correct direction

 

I used some 1/4" AL bar stock, and drilled a hole in it. cheap and easy.

 

Only need to drop your carrier bearing if you get post lift vibes/noises. Youll know for sure if it needs dropped. Although, dropping the carrier bearing isnt really the proper way of fixing driveline vibes. It fixes the angle at the rear of your driveahaft, but changes it coming out of the transmission. Not the best option. imo. 3 degree axle shims will bring your DS angle back to stock without affecting anything else but adding 3/8" of rear lift or so.

Also if your replacing it, be sure to get the

Spicer 211750-1x bearing instead of a parts store version. Its an oem bearing for $75 versus $200 at the dealership. Ive got one, and I havent had any issue for 10k miles so far.

 

I dont agree, just because the truck doesn't produce vibes right away, doesn't mean its not wearing out the CB faster that eventually leads to vibes.

I do agree that shims should be added in conjunction.

 

I was able to get OEM Carrier Bearing on Ebay for a good price.
Can you explain the 3 degree axle shim? and how its done thanks!

 

I lifted my Tacoma and was getting drive line vibration between 15mph-25mph. I bought a 1-1/2 inch carrier bearing drop bracket for it and my issue went away.

 

3 degree shim go between your leafs and your axle, changing the angle of your rear diff, basically rotates your rear axle up to put your driveline back in line

Looks like you need some Wheelers Super bumps for that back end. I have them front and rear and they are awesome!

 

Thats not my truck, I just found a picture online. Too dark and cold to take a pic this morning. Im running Durobump stops. Im loving them.

 

For some reason I think Wheeler's markets their carrier bearing drop for 2nd gens on their website but I used this kit for my 1st gen just fine, it drops the CB down maybe a half an inch or so. Just a couple of small metal spacers and longer bolts.

There used to be a bracket that someone made for 1st gens that would lower the carrier bearing enough to put your driveshaft at a straight angle but it isn't around anymore I don't think. @zero4 has one on his truck

Yeah the CB drop I have is the one Adrian posted above. Their website is still up but if you go to their forum here in TW there's a note saying the vendor had issues. Not sure if that's the case still.
