I had the same issues as the OP, but the software update fixed it for me.

2.7MT here does fine but I monitor it and hit cancel>then downshift>resume if it feels like it's working to stay in OD. I drive with a light foot and a tactical downshift maintains that strategy whether it's my foot or the comps. I mostly use it late at night or when there are few others on the road. It's definitely not smart since without terrain mapping it can't anticipate so is always correcting for something already past. Rolling hills I'm better off using my own foot.

Both of mine did it bone stock. They perform perfectly...once they stay in 4th gear.

They absolutely lug 5th and forget about 6th. Don't believe me...put it in 6th or 5th gear manually and try like hell to maintain speed on the Eway sometime. Its laughable...both engines. 5th can do it...if the hill/wind isn't too bad but it lugs badly which is very very hard on the bearings.

I have a 2019 2.7 Auto. I think there are two programming changes to make Radar Cruise more usable but it all comes down to being less aggressive. If you could set a limit on throttle position this thing would be great.

    * Be less aggressive in catching back up to target speed - Like when you are cruising at 65 mph with cruise set at 75 mph and the guy in front of you lane changes out of your way. My truck will double down shifts and take off like a bat out of hell. It would be great if you could allow it to accelerate back to target more slowly.

    * On inclines, allow for some loss of MPH before down shifting to try and get back to target speed - I am in NJ, on parkway we have rolling hills but other then the Driscoll bridge we have no huge extended inclines. I find as I approach hills other cars give up little bit of speed on the incline. They seem to maintain a more consistant throttle position. What I find is if no one is right in front of me then my car downshifts to race up hill only for the radar to take over as I catch up. A human driver on the same hill will never pound the throttle like this truck does.

My 3.5 2019 also does the crazy downshift -> hold gear behavior. I've been messing with the radar distance but that hasn't seemed to fix anything. I tend to CC around 65-70 mph so maybe because it is out of the powerband it does that.

Are you guys putting it into sport/manual shifting on the autos to hold 4th or 5th gear?

My 2019 V6 automatic either doesn't have the problem or I'm just too oblivious to realize that it does. Either way I'm satisfied with the performance of the truck.
BTW, the dynamic cruise control is one of the things that I like the most about this new truck. I wish that this technology had been available to us years ago.

Your 07 didnt have 2 overdrive gears. OV tune doesnt change the gearing and because 5th and 6th are so close in ratio, the AT will toggle between the two or select 4th to maintain momentum.
    upload_2015-8-17_19-47-54.jpg

To prevent toggling you have S mode to remove one or both OD gears.

Truck is doing what it was designed to do automatically. You dont like the performance of that design then pick something else next time.

Agreed, I've only put 250 miles on my 2019 OR, but a few highway trips, and I'm happy. Yeah, the trans has to down shift due to a lack of low end torque.
I'm not being disrespectful, but I'm wondering if some are still used to older vehciles with more low end torque and 4 speed trans.
My company vehicle, is a 2017 F150 has a 10 speed, while it performs great, it did take some getting used to.

I love the truck...buts its the worst engine trans combo I've ever seen.

Truth be told I don't care that much. My requirements were bombproof longevity which i think the 2.7 will handle, off road capability, and the limited utility i use a truck for.

So far so good with my 2019s!

1 - How do you know if your VIN is on the software update list? 2 - I believe the Entune menu has a listing for the truck's current software version...what is the software version you have that has fixed your issue?

My cruise control always works great. It does downshift more at higher speeds. That bothers you? I had the cc set at 85 mph most of the way across Montana this fall. Took cc off going up grades because I didn't like seeing the RPMs go over 5000. I'm sure the truck was fine but I didnt want to suffer the gas millage hit or listen to the engine.

I think a lot of the engine/transmission "problems" with this truck would be solved if Toyota installed more sound insulation to make it sound like a Lexus.

You’d think what you’re saying makes sense, but my wife has a 2018 grand Cherokee with the 6 cylinder 8 speed combo and it’s not anywhere near as bad as the Tacoma. Gear shifts are way smoother and less aggressive. You can also slightly depress the gas pedal and it won’t downshift too gears and rev from 2000 to 4000 to gain speed. It will hold the same gear to gain a little speed and then if you really press it, it’s a much smoother operation. The 8 speed is a phenomenal transmission. Had it in my 2014 ram 1500 hemi and now the wife’s gc. Will also probably have it in a 2020 or 2021 ram 2500 3/4 ton 6.4 hemi. The Tacoma is a fun truck, but not so much a fun driving experience.
