And what safety protocols will be needed to prevent this from going off on the actual owner?

Good point, I guess there must be some sort of a sensor that will detect forceful entry and suspicious activity inside the car such as messing with ignition.

I'm sure it'll be a rock solid system like Entune.

Uh... no thanks Toyota. I'll just roll my window down when I fart.

If it can be done reliably cool. Car jacking and theft is off the charts bc many police depts are going to no pursuit policies which in turn has increased theft. Of course you run if you know the cops won’t chase.

And what happens when the thief gets gassed and plows into another car or a group of people? Sounds like a bad idea.

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
After the fact. Hows about you just make the vehicle harder (thereby less desirable) to steal in the first place, Toyota?

Sounds like a great way for the car owner to be sued into oblivion.

And is it legal for citizens to own tear gas? lol

What about in case of an accident, occupants are trapped in the vehicle and tank goes off.

And nobody can help them because of the tear gas threat.

This idea is almost as dumb as putting a snorkel on the Pro.

I don’t want to assume but I would think Toyota engineers have thought of all these “What ifs” - I think immobilzation is probably the best bet - or maybe using biometric to start the car.

Nonetheless - It would be epic to see a thief get tear gassed. I would think the system is designed to gas them before the car even moves. But I could be wrong.

Sounds like a booby trap and in general, illegal in the US.

Once the truck is recovered, how would you get rid of the smell?

I've been dealing with too many patent attorneys at work lately - To me this doesn't sound like they have plans to actually produce this, they just came up with the "innovation" to get around someone else's existing patent on car fragrance...

I watched a segment on tv about it and they said it also blows out floral smells too, so maybe it will blow out roses to mask the tear gas, lol.

Agreed, this Toyota “proposal” is just BS propaganda in order to steal another manufacturers already patented product/idea.

Absolutely, “... A booby trap may be defined as any concealed or camouflaged device designed to cause bodily injury when triggered by any action of a person making contact with the device. This term includes guns, ammunition, or explosive devices attached to trip wires or other triggering mechanisms, sharpened stakes, nails, spikes, electrical devices, lines or wires with hooks attached, and devices for the production of toxic fumes or gases...”

“... If a person sets up such a trap to protect his/her property, he/she will be liable for any injury or death even to an unwanted intruder such as a burglar. It is illegal to set a booby trap on one's own property to prevent intruders...”

It happens frequently across many different industries.

Company A manages to get a patent approval on their new clock radio because the snooze button is painted blue, as it technically qualifies as "unique and innovative". This hinders company B's plans to make a new line of blue clock radios. So, company B then files the patent application that their blue snooze button plays a fart sound whenever it is pressed. Patent approved. Company B starts production with this new method, but of course the fart sound is "disabled by default" at the factory. That's pretty much the simple metaphor of the current state of patent law in this country.
