We've been down this road...you and I in fact.
There is a 5th spot in TechStream, however, TechStream's TPMS writer only allows 4 TPMS registrations to the 16+ Tacoma. It appears that the TS software shows more than what the truck's computer is capable of holding.

I can 100% confirm the truck's programming cannot store 5 TPMS registrations.

You can rotate in a 5th, but you have to re-register the 4 IDs mounted at the hubs each rotation. It's what I'm currently doing. Takes about 5-8mins start to finish to register the TPMS.

I’m glad I happened upon this thread. I’d considering picking up two spares and was curious about how to handle the TPMS situation.

Do you happen to have a procedure handy for how you register the Sensors?

First you need a copy of TechStream Lite. If you visit the OVTuned thread there is a link to a reliable version. A disc can be obtained through eBay.
Second you need a usb OBD2 Tactrix cable that is capable of writing to the truck. It so happens that the cheap usb OBD2 I got off eBay is merely a paperweight. The cable supplied with OVTune works flawlessly. I suggest spending the money on a good, reliable cable.

The process is pretty self explanatory from there. Truck off, ignition on. Hook up laptop to truck via usb OBD2, start program, choose engine and key type, wait...load TPMS menu and register the IDs in succession.

Is techstream lite a free version or is this just one of those pirated versions you're referring to

I paid a few bucks for mine. It’s a full version that is not updateable. 5000 day free registration.

I would grab A sander and grind away some rubber every couple thousand miles.

Amazon has them too. Just look for the latest dated version you can get your hands on. Mine was from December 17.

I only have 4 sensors and I do have techstream. There are 5 cells in techstream for sensor but only 4 codes can be entered when you do the registration. I used an Autel TS508 and under Tacoma it let's you register 5 slots.. I only have 4 sensors, but I'm about to add a 5th for my spare OR now that I know it will work as spare thanks to op. Anyone ever tried using an Autel to program all 5? I need to find someone selling one OR wheels for cheap then I'll jump on this and find out my results. Already got tires and TPMS ready to go. Just need a wheel and an hour at the hobby shop to out my new tires on my wheels.

I went from 265/65/r17 to 265/70/r17, so the spare is still stock size and wheel. I don't really want to buy a 5th matching wheel. Will the spare wheel with the 265/70 suffice on trails? or do I need to get a 5th matching wheel?
