Help diagnose engine noise on 2.4 L 2RZ-FE

Here's a video I found of a similar noise I hear on my truck. It happens at idle. I have a oil pressure gauge installed and i have heard it with up to 20psi sometimes.

The clicking or the buzzing sound? Theres a lot of different noises going pn there.

 

Can you locate if it’s coming from the bottom end or not? That could help isolate the sound. I see you were looking into oil pressure which is the right mindset because it does some a bit rod knock like. How does the sound change with rpm?

 

Thanks for the replies, I will try to check tomorrow, I have a stethoscope, just not sure where to place it on the engine to check different parts.
The noise is a knock type sound, I've heard that it could be the timing chain not getting enough oil pressure on the tensioner but after I installed pressure gauge i notice that pressure is high when the noise shows up.

The noise only occurs at low rpm, near idle. engine sounds fine at higher rpm. I'll provide more details tomorrow

BTW noise is identical to the one on the video I posted, its more audible when the person is on the wheel well, its a tapping sound. tap tap tap
I did some investigation this today.
Temperature 83 degrees, engine cold.

then it starts from here....tap tap tap

revving to 800-900 rpm noise is no longer audible....maybe drowned by other noise?

I poked around with stethoscope and the closest vibration i heard at the same frequency was around bell housing....like the springs on the clutch? It was even notifiable where the slave cylinder touches the fork.

The odd thing is that the noise can be heard from the front of the car, like its on the harmonic balancer. Which was covered in oil when i got the truck a few years back I replace front seal since and it been dry ever since, but I wonder if rubber on balancer has been compromised. I also installed a new clutch when i bought the truck, along with seals to fix all the oil leaks.

Truck has about 145K and i only put 3K since I got it.

My 2rz has a rattling sound coming from the front at idle. I believe it to be the timing chain rattling at low rpm. It's been making that noise for 150k or so...

 

Sounds like timing chain is hitting the guide

 

Almost sounds like an exhaust leak. Are you throwing any codes such as P0171?

 

Thanks for the replies, No codes other than p0401 about egr. modulator is shot and new one is on the way. IT sounds more like a clanking than exhaust to me. could me the chain but stethoscope doesn't pick up any noise in the area. thats why I was leaning toward a part that is spinning and not hitting a static part that the stethoscope can pick up.

 

My 2018 2.7L started knocking last week only has 900 miles. Engine sounds much louder than when I first got it last month sound very similar to the video but with more pronounced knocking

 

Yeah almost sounds like the chains slapping and hitting the guide. Put the stethoscope on the valve cover by the oil fill and listen, also on side of head in front of the motor.

 

I have this exact same noise, same engine. 1998 2.4L 5spd man trans 2wd with 62k miles. Stethoscope sounds like metallic tapping at random places around the head, block, intake, exhaust, front and rear of engine. You can hear the noise (tapping/rattle) when walking around the front of the truck and it will randomly get louder or sound different every few seconds. Only when warm and at idle. I would love to know if anyone has found what’s causing the noise. I am a tech and already ruled out anything and everything you can check without tearing down the engine or removing the head or trans. My best guess is that one link on the timing chain is sticky and doesn’t like going around the crank gear. I plan on driving it until whatever fails and then find out! If anyone has had this issue and fixed it, please comment!!

 

Injectors are pretty noisy on this engine. Also valves make a little bit of noise. If it's not bad or real noticable I say drive er. Only 62k...that's not even broke in. I'd be surprised if something serious was wrong. Probably normal.

One thing you ought to do is check the valve clearances though.

 

Valve cover has never been off (until now) and the noise is loud enough for you to make a weird face like “whoa you sure you got oil in it?”. I can’t find anything wrong. Even removed the crank pulley, totally fine.

 

How are the valve clearances?

 

Honestly, my 2.4L with 230k makes a similar noise and it is as healthy ass an ox.

 

All were less than 14 some were less than 10 on the exhaust side but not by much. Intake side were more than 5 and less than 10. I don’t check the exact clearance because it just takes too long. I grab 2 feeler gauge sizes -one maximum and one minimum- so I can go through them all pretty quick.

 

I did buy (about a month ago) Toyota oem scissor gear spring washer, wave washer and snap ring thinking that was causing it. I didn’t take the exhaust cam out, maybe I should have? But with the valve cover off I tried to move the split gears independently and see how much lash, didn’t notice any, couldn’t move them at all. Now looking at the pictures from the other day I’m thinking I should’ve taken the exh cam out and removed the spring to see if it was cracked/broken. You can see in the picture where there seems to be more noticeable wear like a “heel/toe” on one gear more than the other. Didn’t catch on to that when the valve cover was off.

 

You ever find out what it was, i know its a old post but i have the same issue on my 2rz and am trying to troubleshoot it.
