Motor oil filter change interval?

call me lazy but I’d rather not change the oil filter every oil change - taking the skid plates off every time gets old! And I just don’t trust the quick n dirty oil change shop down the road.

What are guys doin for oil filter change intervals? Was doin’ every oil change at around 5k but may be overkill.. 10k good on a filter? Was running the k&n motor oil filter but switch back to Toyota oem filter. Thoughts on getting best filter for longest intervals?

 

Change the oil change the filter. It takes 10 min if that....

 

I change mine with filter every 5-7k depending on how I feel.... I’ve gotten to 250k miles that way. I also don’t remove the skid, so I have lots of excess left over but that prevents rust right?? I use penzoil high mileage and a fram filter.

I’ve never removed the skid for an oil change. A little messier but I always buy a big pack of rags for an oil change and just know that4-5 of them will be soaked in oil. Also put a flattened box under everything to catch any drips, and clean it all with simple green at the end.

You should always change your filter with the oil, if anything go 5K on the filter and 10K on the oil!

 

Since you have a skid plate you can look into this drain valve:

I've been eyeing one for a while, they sound too good to be true. Hook up some vinyl tubing back into a bottle and no more mess.

Filters are cheap..

 

every 5k or 4-6mo - drop the skid, mobil 1, toyota filter... done. excessive, could I wait longer? sure... does it matter? nope...

 

Nice I got this already! Works well for just the oil. And some surgical tubing is great for doin in nice n clean

But the oil filter is the real bitch gotta remove the skid plate for the and it splashes all over the place it’s a big pain in the ass!

Just wondering if 5k intervals for the filter only is overkill.. and if there are longer lasting filters

Go synthetic and the 5,000-mile oil change becomes 10,000-mile change and of course a NEW filter with the NEW oil! I converted from dino oil to synthetic (Castrol High Mileage) a few years ago on my 2010 Tacoma. I used to change every 4,000 miles on dino oil and now do it at 8-10 thousand.

I’ve heard of people running Jeep filters for twice as much ‘filter’ which would increase intervals for sure but I question the pressure/flow restriction from the increased filter, effectively getting less flow and worse cooling

 

Right.....you can’t trust all shops. Example, my son was in the Coast Guard and couldn’t change his oil at home so he relied on various shops.
He came home on leave and I changed his oil and filter (PIA canister filter on a VW GTi) , the filter was full of bearing dust and muck, sucked in and collapsed.
It hadn’t been changed in years by at least three different shops : (

When I got my truck from the original owner the skid plate was missing screws n a few of them were stripped to hell - as they really don’t give a damn when doin oil changes!

I’ve heard of 2 horror sorties in the last month or two from quick n dirty oil change shops..

Even if I went up there with my own oil and own filter in hand I’d still have a very hard time putting my confidence in them doing it right

However had a great local mechanic do some work under the hood I went in and checked what he did he replaced all the stripped bolts and non were missing dude did a killer job, so not all are sketchy!

Edit: shop was yotaluma in Petaluma CA. Won’t go anywhere else!!

 

Evidently... It must be the high cost of filters.

I know I cringe every time I buy one for my 2016 V6.

 

Skid plate is like two boldts you don’t even have to take it all the way off

 

I switched to synthetic a billion miles ago, change every 15k.
