i was wondering if it was normal shifting to second gear is a little rough in ect. It’s only if I’m really light on the gas when it hits 2nd gear it accelerates hard without me pushing on the gas. Also it’s a little jerky above 1500 rpm when pushing on gas after foot was off.

ECT is not smooth when the truck is lightly loaded. It is especially harsh going downhill with no weight in the bed. It is really only a good driving experience with a laden truck, in mountainous areas, or towing, or if your have oversized tires an a pile of overland bloat.

Dealership may inform you “that’s a normal trait for this powertrain”... but it’s not, mine is smooth regardless of ECT on/off. Under warranty, so take it in. I’ve resorted to videoing all issues before taking any of my vehicles in for work... try to duplicate and video to assist service department diagnostics.

My ECT is smooth also. I've never had an issue with it. I do not believe rough ECT is normal, just based on my personal experience in two 3rd gen tacos. Good tip about videoing, I'm running with that since I'm about to have to take mine in for a sensor issue...

I use ECT ALL the time, and mine is smooth.

Mine does the same at lighter throttle, surge in rpm from first to second and then quick acceleration. I wouldn't call it rough. Just more like a software issue with the shift. Doesn't bother me too much though. Just hammer down when in etc.

Exactly. It’s only if I’m real light on the gas. If I’m heavy on it it shows no issues.

IMO I believe it's all in your perception of rough, performance or whatever you want to call it. Everybody has a different opinion. Example a 70 year old vs a 20 year old. A performance car driver vs a sedan.

ECT does that, you get some surgy rev hang and then thump it shifts. Mine always does it. The 1-2/2-1 shifting on the taco is harsh. ECT seems to make it worse at times. They all do it, some seem worse than others or people are used to it. Either way is fine. Try using ECT after the truck warms up, should help a bit
