Well...this is what I get for trusting the dealership to change my oil.

The last oil change was at the dealer and apparently they did not read the spec sheet on torquing down the oil filter housing. It's only supposed to be 19 foot pounds.

When I tried to change my oil today it was so tight that not only would it not turn but I first broke the cap wrench then busted the tabs off the plastic housing...:annoyed:

Anybody have any ideas on how to get this loose? I'm tempted to put the plug back in the bottom, fill it up with oil and drive with the dirty filter until I can get it to the dealer in two weeks.

Angry does not even begin to describe my mood right now.20190317_134358.jpg

Definitely upgrade to the aluminum cap!!

I would run the old filter til the new cap comes in then rip that plastic one out.

The plastic swells. You can set it at the factory torque spec and it still be a bitch to get back off.

that's what i would do as you can still drive it.

i also put the aluminum cap on ... The first time i tried to change mine i almost snapped it... sucks but i think you should be able to get if off , or make the dealer do it ...

maybe if the oil was warm it may move, some

Also you can get the new cap and wrench as a combo pack on Amazon

put plug back in, spray oil off with brake cleaner so it's not lubed up. Then a strap wrench like the poster above mentioned.

Old filter will be fine until you get a replacement.

Do you guys know, if I fill it back up now, then get the aluminum cap ordered, can I replace the filter without draining all my oil out. Hate to loose 6 quarts of fresh oil.

Or when I pull the filter will all the oil drain?

I have ordered the aluminum cap. But I still need to figure out how to remove the one I got.

I'm pretty sure I remember replacing the filter first and then draining the oil when I did my oil change.

This won't void your warranty? Just asking.

Shouldn't ? as long as the dealer isn't a dick about it and they did the last one AND you have the right wrench for it i would think not...

Its for getting it off the cap. not the replacement cap,,, No problem with the cap as it is OEM toyota

Well, plan B is a failure. When the tab broke off it cracked the plastic housing. Soooo, truck is dead until I get this one off and replace with another.

Still having no luck budging this thing. Strap wrench is a no go.

Get a hose clamping on plastic housing
Get the strap wrench over the hose clamp
    May work that way

Thanks all. I got it off finally. I had to wedge the cap wrench on to the housing with a piece of sandpaper inside the wrench for purchase. Then grabbed the outside of the cap wrench with an 18" pipe wrench....

And it still took all my might to break it free.
