I’ll link the best oil filter wrench to use any of the ones that use a teeth suck in my opinion. Broke a housing like this one time because of the poor design. Also snapped the head of the tool once & bent one. This will let you get all the torque down on the housing without stressing the weak points.

The one that broke was a cast aluminum one.

I've been doing cartridge filter changes on Toyota engines for nearly 15 years, on all manner of vehicles for family, friends and neighbors. The only time I've seen housing damage is when someone uses a regular filter wrench that does not properly grab the housing. You might get away with it for awhile until you have to remove a really tight one. Then that cap wrench that "almost fits" becomes a liability. It can round off the end or slip and crack the housing. Even with the aluminum housing, you risk damaging it with an improper cap wrench.

Get the real thing. The TOY640 is available for less than $20 on Amazon. It will not slip and is deep enough for solid engagement.

I've actually used an 18" breaker bar to break loose tight housings...plastic and aluminum without any damage on more than one occasion.

What happens when you put a $9 an hour monkey in charge of doing oil changes. Sadly that's the fact at dealers and probably most places. The pride of doing your own work is rewarding but sometimes I like the idea of putting someone else on the hook in the responsibiity dept.

Glad you got that thing off.

Yep stay with them til the warranty expires and then find a specialist that's fair price wise.

Baxter Performance spin on adapter. Make life easy for yourself. Worth the $200. Hard to put a torque wrench on a spin on filter.

They may not have ever changed the filter. It could be torqued on from the factory when your truck was made. Seriously, the dealership often doesn’t do shit.

It's been off several times. I've changed the oil 3 times and the dealer 3. I've got 60k or so on the truck.

Ok then it’s the dealer and they still suck.

Just checking since I’ve seen the dealer not change the filter the first few changes.

What a coincidence OP. My new Tacoma had it's last oil change done at the dealership I bought it from.

I also broke my filter wrench today attempting the first oil change on my new Tacoma. I'm considering buying this wrench and attempting again. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XTAGHU0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=AMO9Q84JXX23S&psc=1
I don't think most people understand just how tight the filter is screwed on. I used a 150ft/lb torque wrench with a 25 pound meter long steel bar and the filter didn't move a hair and broke the filter wrench pictured below. I even bought a 2nd filter wrench, forged aluminum, but it doesn't hold the entire canister, only the bottom half and it was starting to shear off the plastic.

This whole ordeal was a circus and a makes me question if DIY oil changes are even worth it. At this point I am close to deciding making all future oil changes at my local Valvoline Express Care shop.

Dealerships are dangerous places like hospitals. Cartridge filter is a piss poor design done just to please environmentalists worried about spin on filters in dumps. Bought the Baxter adapter and changes are a breeze. No better result at local oil change shop as they like torque wrenches too.

OP I had a similar experience the first time I went to change my oil. It was way over torqued by the dealer. I used a generic toyota filter wrench from autozone to remove the filter housing and it came off but not without chipping one of the flanges on the housing.

Will be using the MotivX wrench from now on. Leason learned .. buy once cry once
