I still recommend centering the tent on the bed. If you put the tent too close to the cab, you won't be able to put the 2 awning rods into that side (not that the other 3 aren't enough, but it looks goofy with one flat awning). I run Dakars without the AAL and the OME Nitro shocks and it has been perfect for a full bed rack, soft or hard RTT, ARB awning, and a couple hundred pounds of cooler and gear. The AAL will make things really stiff and I only recommend it if you're constantly putting hundreds of pounds in the bed on a regular basis. My Dakars don't sag even when loaded, but ride really nice with a couple hundred pounds in the back. Truck always looks level or just a tiny bit of rake.

I didn’t even think about that window awning but you’re right. How do the Dakars ride when you’re not loaded up?

I usually just have some bungee cords and stretch them over the room to a mounting point to open that awning. That still allows me to use the roof of my cab as a "shelf" outside my window.

I didn't do measurements but I can recommend to build some kind of air deflector like for semi trucks. I built one for my RTT set up(fully custom roof racks for cab and bed over shell) and for the front part of cab roof rack.

Bought the High Country 55 tri-layer from FSR. Can't wait to use it next week out in Anza. 20190318_092005.jpg

I’m seriously considering this tent as well, but I haven’t been able to find many examples of how it works/looks with the Tacoma short bed.

Does it extend beyond your tailgate at all? What is your impression of how the tri-layer will do in warm weather?

Do you have any other photos?

Oh man, was this going to be fun. A trip like no other (so far). A trip with a twist. A trip that was actually two. Let me explain.

For a while now, Anza Borrego Desert State Park in California has been on my list of places to explore. Like Death Valley - which we've visited quite a bit and recently hiked for three days - it's a great place to visit during the winter because temperatures in the summer can get rather unbearable - so much so that certain roads in the park are closed from mid-June to September. The problem is that the drive to-and-from Anza Borrego is a bit too long to make our normal 6-day jaunts worthwhile.

So you can imagine my excitement when I realized that there was an opportunity to nearly double the length of the trip and cut the driving in half, all at the same time!

To find out how, read the first chapter and see photos of my first experience in Anza-Borrego, check out:

From what I understand, if you have low bed bars the M49 can hang up to 20” off the back... that’s pretty far. I’m looking for a good cab height bed rack system to get a GoFSR tent

I was hoping that would be the advantage of the FSR High Country 55". It's supposed to be only 60" long when closed. I'm really trying to stay below cab height so I can get in and out of my garage.

The RTT does not go past the tailgate and it fits well on a short bed. If you were to get the High Country 80", that will for sure go past the tailgate. As for the warmer months, just open the windows which in this tent has 3 huge windows to let the breeze flow through. I will be taking it this weekend out to Anza Borrego and the temps will be 30-40 degrees. So far the quality of this tent is superb and opening/closing is a breeze.

Here are some I just took in my garage. It fits perfectly on the short bed. Will be using the tent for our trip to Colorado at the end of the month. Setup was a breeze and so was taking it down.

Looks like a solid setup, but Colorado in March hope you have a heater in your setup.
