Not to be rude, I appreciate your gesture, but.. I never understood why people these days thank military members for their sacrifices and service. Don't people in the military choose their job, don't they get enlistment benefits/bonuses, health care, housing, good pay for a job that requires no previous skills since the military pays for all of their schooling? Don't military members choose to stay in past their contract or choose to sign another contract to have their job longer? People in the military essentially get promoted with little effort which makes for an even bigger paycheck. What exactly is their sacrifice? They know the risks before they join and weigh the risks vs reward before they sign the dotted line.

I did 12.5 years in the army and I got paid well, traveled, education benefits, promotions, and did so willingly because the pay and benefits were good. I didn't do it for "good and country", in fact very few people join the military out of patriotism but out of necessity and benefits. I felt awkward when people thanked me but I did appreciate their kindness. I feel that a military service member is no different than any other profession.

The only exception to my view are the guys back in the day that got drafted. They didn't have a choice and war during Vietnam and previous times were legitimately brutal compared to today's wars.

Haha... True. But when people don't choose to then the government gives more incentives. Back in 2003 when I enlisted the incentives were high. I got large bonuses when I re-enlisted. Point being, unless there's a large scale war the draft is a thing of the past. There are too many good incentives offered that reel people in.

 

Also 87 gas this past winter between $1.79 to 2.19 per gallon.
We are poor, but not taxed to death, just starving towards it.

These money threads always amaze me. If you can afford a new Tacoma, you have more weath than maybe 7,000,000,000 (that’s 7 billion) people on earth. Yet we complain about the cost of things.

I think it is a mental illness of sorts to have more weath than 90% of all humans on earth and not be overflowing with gratitude.

In 2017 a bill was passed refered to as the ST3 for Sound Transit 3 which pays for a new train system being built that raised the vehicle registration tax from 0.3 % to 1.1 % per every $10,000 of the value of your vehicle. Since my husband and I both owned cars, a boat with trailer and we had a truck to tow the boat we paid over $2500 that year on registration taxes. I about died.

 

Wasn’t upset about the cost as mentioned above, we like our toys and know we have to pay up for them, but the dramatic increase was hard to stomach.

 

Kiddo huh... I'm guessing that since you're pulling out the big boy insults, I guess I struck a nerve. That's okay, not everyone is going to agree with my opinion.

I'm sure you worked very hard. Almost everyone in the military works hard. I didn't mean that promotions come without hard work. I meant that promotions come by simply doing your job and staying out of trouble. Hard work is easy, manual labor is just giving up some sweat when needed but doesn't really require much thought or intelligence. Therefore, promotions come easy in the military especially since things in the military are usually pretty simple jobs.

So you joined to save lives and make a difference... Lemme ask you, if the military paid you half of what you've made and didn't offer free health care, would you still do it? Bottom line is that I think people join the military for the economic reasons with an added benefit of knowing that they're making a difference. That's a job perk but hardly the exact reason people join the military. IF you joined not caring about the money or benefits then go ahead and put on the cape because you're a rare breed. I've asked a lot of guys in the military if they would do their job for half pay and no health care and they all said no. Most people in the military I talked to said they joined because they didn't have many other choices. That's why rich or educated people aren't in the service because there's better options elsewhere.

My opinion isn't based off of an assumption, it's based off of experience, talking to other people and taking in their experience, and hanging my pride up and analysing why I was really doing what I was doing. Like many people who stay in the military, I stayed in because I didn't set myself up for success to get out. I got used to a steady check and a reliable job. Once I got my life and plans in order I got out and decided to do something better for myself and my family.

 

washington county oregon adds another $60. just paid $172 for 2 yrs.
btw: even though you don't have to get it DEQ smogged for a few years, you still have to pay the smog fee (its in the $172).

 

More wealth because we choose to work, like some people choose not to work, especially a state like California, heck they're paying people that are not even registered, lol...
