Transmission compatibility

I have a 97 Tacoma 4x4 2.7l

And I need a new transmission.

The salvage yard I went to said the 97 Tacoma has a “year specific transmission”. So my question is, are any newer year transmissions compatible with my 97 Tacoma with minor modifications?

I always fixed the transmission that came out of the truck .
With that being said , I am not up to speed with what will fit from other years .
Call around to a couple wrecking yards . They know exactly what fits and what doesnt
