I was down there for the first time around Christmas and covered some of the same area as you and your son. Wonderful country, endless exploring. Going again in 3 weeks from Oregon and hope to get further south than San Ignacio this time. I am a fan of Tecate - San Felipe for getting south.

There may have been one or two people in San Francisquito, but I didn't see them. Nice stretch of beach off the beaten track with beautiful water.

    Thanks for the writeup!

Unless I have to I'll never take the MX1/TJ crossing again. MX5/Tecate is a MUCH more enjoyable route. How far south are you looking to go?

I have kite surfing friends I think somewhere north or around La Paz. Maybe Mulege or south of there too? But I've heard of things that sound fun like a sand road from San Juanico toward Guerrero Negro. So many choices. I haven't been doing much research, partly because the last trip just wandering around was full of nice surprises.

That's a great attitude, actually. In Baja, it all works out and great stories are told around the campfire.
The primary kite boarding place is La Ventana, east from La Paz. See my TRIP #6 report from 2017.

Be sure and stop in Loreto. I can get you connected with some friends who are staying there for the next several months.

This is the best time of year down there when the whales are running. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that we can do every year. So awesome to pet the whales.

I'm gonna try to and get down there again in November to try and swim with the whale sharks.

I need a vacation. November would be a good deadline for me to do some upgrades to my truck... Or truck the motorcycle to the border.

We need more BAJA trip reports folks! Post them even if they are not recent trips... Photos are great even if they aren't fantastic like anomalyTRD!
Baja is 1,000 miles of fun, and a whole lot more!

That looks like an amazing time. I would love to do a similar trip but after watching Drugs Inc, Dope, etc. on Netflix. I prefer to minimize variables were the cartel adds me to the growing numbers of missing people. What a darn shame that is. I also don't speak a lick of Spanish as that could hinder my experience as well.

That must be some good fear propaganda. I'll have to add it to my queue.

On an earlier trip on motorcycles with OP, we had zero problems. General awareness and not being an incompetent human gets you pretty far when visiting other countries. We saw one blacked out SUV hauling ass towards us at one point and slowed down and stayed out of their way. No problems.

If you are not in the illegal drug trade or in Mexican law enforcement, then you are not a target. You will be the victim of crime in an American city much more than any traveling in Baja. If bad things happened to tourists or off-road racers more so than in the U.S., then that would be the end of any of that. I have been camping in Baja on my own since I was 16 and now I am 61... I have never been the victim of a crime in Baja. I feel safer camping down there than anywhere in the U.S. There just is nothing in the U.S. close to having the attractions that Baja has for me. Of course, besides the desert and beaches, I dig the 300-year-old missions and old mines all over Baja!
