I own a 2004 sr5 3.4 4x4 with a manual tranny that has already done 167k miles. For some months I have been having trouble with random engine hesitation. Initially I replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, coils wires and sparks plugs and it kept doing it sporadically. I found, what I thought, was the solution in thread that suggested doing a manual dbw throttle adjustment (engine off and step on the accent pedal 100 times) and the problem went away for about 4 weeks. Now its back and getting worst. I would like to eliminate the whole dbw system. How you guys suggest I do this? Source the components from a 02 or earlier truck or get an aftermarket ecu. Please help, I really like my truck but it’s driving me crazy with this glitch.

    Regards,
    Evangelos

Did you check/clean the mass air flow sensor? I struggled with a hesitation for months before someone suggested this to me.

Sorry, no idea how to eliminate dbw.

The throttle temporary fix by cycling the throttle to the floor 100 times is sometimes (usually) a failing TPS sensor. You're probably aware by now it isn't an available separate part, other than purchasing the complete throttle body assembly? It's detailed in the FSM how to test it. But from my experience you need a quality multimeter to view shorts linearly in 100's of MS in the resistance throw to show the TPS is actually the problem.

Oh, and you can't exchange the pre drive by wire to the later that's in your 04 easily. No aftermarket ecu's exist. A complete wiring endeavor would have to happen.

I'd look into finding a complete used 4 pin TPS TB ($250-$350) or new from Toyota ($1300-$1600).

    Hello,

Thanks for the quick reply. I forgot to mention it but I cleaned the MAF and it did not help. Where would you suggest I purchase the used 4 pin TPS TB and how would I know it doesn’t have the same problem.

Is a new new tb still available directly from Toyota (could you provide the p/n?)?

I did a lot of research before I bought the car used about year and half ago and I never came across any complaints about this particular problem. It surprises me been that is a very expensive fix.

I was hoping there was cheaper solution (aftermarket) since the truck model has been in use for so long.

I did a quick search (using the vin number in the parts.toyota.com site) I got two parts that look the same but have different part numbers

22030-62020 body assembly, throttle with motor $949.92

    22210-62260 body assembly, throttle $779.11

Both diagrams show the tb but the cheaper one seems to have more parts.

Do you have a check engine light on? If so, what's the code?

It bothers me that they changed it for two model years at the end of the generation. Going to make fixing this problem a lot more difficult as the vehicles get older.

Checked the resistance as per FSM and it was within limits (1.6 kΩ). Could you elaborate on the check procedure you are suggesting?

You may want to check out the site below. This has been the best site for looking up parts and it's based on your vin #.
The below throttle body assy, w/motor came up when I put in my vin# for my 2003 3.4.
Hope it all works out for you.

Still makes our first gens more difficult than other first gens does it not? Which is a shame because Toyota could have waited until 05 to do this.

Already performed the press the throttle with the key out of the ignition and it worked initially but after a month the problem reappeared and is gotten gradually worst. I checked the resistance on the TPS as described on the FSM (see picture below) and the resistance reading was within spec (1.6kΩ). On you first post you made reference on a procedure that requires the use of a quality multimeter, I would like for you to elaborate on the procedure since it seems it’s different from the “regular” resistance reading described in the FSM.

Replaced the tb assembly with a used one from a 02 4Runner and now the car runs like a champ.... hopefully the fix lasts for a while
