Hey guys, I’m looking into purchasing a 2000 4Runner that has some frame rust. I’ve always had vehicles with rust being from West Virginia but it seems frame rust and Toyota’s are a serious problem. Check out the pictures and let know if I should keep looking or the rust isn’t too terrible.

Doesn’t look horrible but take a hammer and tap all over the frame to check better

In my experience with my 2001, that's not bad at all. Depending on how involved you want to get there's a lot you can do. At that stage, you could probably do nothing and get many years out of it, or simply keep it oil sprayed in the winter and you may not see it get much worse. Eastwood makes a frame sealant coating that you spray inside of the rails (https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-internal-frame-coating-14oz-aerosol.html) as well as other undercoating products. If you wanted to get really involved you could sand it all down and seal it with POR15 or something. I would pay particular attention to where the rear control arm mounts are welded to the frame, It's hard to tell from your shots.

My frame was coming apart in flakes and actually had large holes eating through it. I ended up getting a piece of metal welded over the whole rail and had to replace a trans cross brace at one point. You definitely had to wear safety glasses if you went down there to poke around! This was happening around 2010, I didn't totally fix it until about five years later and just got rid of it for unrelated issues. Even if you do nothing, I would think you'd be okay for many years.
