Hello all, I am about to DIY a rear swing-out and would love to see other people's setup for guidance and inspiration. Pictures of both the swing out bearing side, and the latching side would be great so I can get a feel for geometry, functionality etc. This is in regards to my removable swing-out thread, but I'm giving up the ease-of-removable aspect and just want to get something going before the bumper starts to take on a lot of rust.

Thinking of using Rick's welding and fabrication located in Carson to cut the 1.5" hole in the two sections for the spindle. Hell maybe have them weld it while it's there cause my mig probably isn't up for it.

Every non-dual swing out I've seen pivots/has the spindle on the passenger side-by-side I assume because it's more convenient for the driver to operate. But a bud mention of from the passenger side it would be better for when loading stuff on/off on a street.

I thinks it’s to put the weight of the tire opposite side of the taco lean( driver, battery and gas tank) and closest to the spindle.

That and mounting a tire (or any load) closer to the spindle will reduce the amount of force/stress on the spindle when opened or left open

Right, I was thinking of inverting the typical setup (like looking at a mirror) so it's more advantageous towards right side streets and street loading / unloading to sidewalk vs I think the typical setup is advantageous for a driver to hop out, walk to the tail and be able to swing out without crossing to the passenger side.

If you're doing a lot of street parking/loading, you may want to consider a dual swing. If someone parks what is normally a reasonable distance from you on the street, you may not be able to open the swing-out very easily and won't have a lot of walking around room when it's open.

And don't forget frame plates. Best done first or at least considered in the design process of the bumper.
The whole thing with frames bending just in front of the axle as a result of tire carriers is what led to the development of frame plates in the first place.

Nah, I've got a little 120v flux core welder (Lincoln 125) and it gets the job done. Takes longer, but it works.

Same here, 3/16 and above I bevel prep and add lil preheat. I don’t really touch 1/4, but use geometry (tubing) to its design advantages.

Yeah, I do kinda regret not getting one that I could covert to gas. slag is a real bitch to clean out when you've got a bunch of tight corners like on the inside of my winch bumper.

Gas would be nice in those cases. But it's definitely extra "stuff" to manage, and I can barely manage flux core, lol

I just wish there were classes around that I could take. I don't want to get certified or anything. Just a couple hours a week or over a weekend or something.

    I know I'm a total goober; a grinder not a welder.

@Fuergrissa I might try pre-heating. I've got some 1/4" plate for my winch plate, and I've been having a tough time getting my welds not to glob over. I slow down the feed to try and keep the heat on longer without building up too much of a pool, but preheating might do the trick...

Verticals are 1/4", horizontal is 3/16:

The joys of modding- so far:
    - Relentless derps the rear bumper options, and not in a good way (like getting features/upgrades not paid for). Also 90% sure they mislabeled the parts kits, switching front and back with each other.
    - EMS off road refunds Amazon order because there is a part out of stock (not due to me hounding, I would have waited, but I get they need to automatically refund maybe because Amazon rules for ship out time or fear of bad reviews). I bet there is a little 'in-stock/out of stock" ticker in their GUI but they didn't use it.

Companies, I get you are hustling to make money, but if I make those kinds of mistakes at work, the ramifications are huge. Being ex-military (so a deep appreciation of attention to detail and many life experiences of the cost due to lack there-of) and having had an eCommerce myself, it really erks me despite being a chill SoCal dude. Get your sh*t together, damn shame its better to conduct commerce with engrish vendors on flee-bay.

    * end rant. Soooo, no progress at all on this project.

There are "repair" sections for rust. The "frame plate" concept resulted from a fellows build of a swing out tire/gas can carrier on Tacoma Territory, around 01-02. After a DV excursion his rust free Ca frame started to buckle. One would think trailer tongue weight would be just as bad but the constant front and back pitching and leverage of the vertical load proved worse. His vehicle insurance covered a new dealer installed frame. IIRC his screen name was "Tankoma". He has since sold out to the FJC crowd.
