Is a conversion possible, if so what would be needed?

The jbl headunit is a canbus system, so you need the jbl amp for it to work.

If you have the JBL amp youll be able to run this even in the earlier 2005-2011 model as far as I am aware but someone more up to speed could clarify that or smash it down haha

I have the full JBL system; i'm worried about adding another $300 in Toyota cabling to match up with the newer deck... not one site ive found
shows complete info on swapping over newer JBL stuff to an older JBL system...

It’s all in the wires and the plugs in the back newer models have different plugs and the wire position has change! So a wire diagram and the type of plug you have plus the antenna and you can get it to work with your year

So here’s my 2 cents. I did this on my current Prius, I mention it because I am almost sure it would be the same thing. I had a regular non-touch screen JBL radio. I purchased a JBL touch screen with Entune. Power, speakers plug and play (the big plug). Antenna, needed a $3 adapter on eBay. If you’re truck has a mic already it will probably work fine. You may need the scion 24 to 20 pin adapter that costs around $40 for aux, mic and steering wheel controls. If you didn’t have usb you will need a $3 cable. You may need a $12 gps antenna as well. After all of this it will

Check out this thread for an idea of what you need
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/aux-usb-radio-harness.533380/

So in conclusion it will work if you’re doing JBL to JBL but you will need the usual adapters extra.

And looking at this radio, you will also need an XM antenna.

Yes. Actually you need an iPhone and the entune app to provide internet for the radio. You can get traffic, weather and stream slacker radio if you connect your iPhone to it. The iPhone will also be used as an iPod on the radio.
