So, I had a dilemma. I wanted to use a Frontrunner rack from my old 4runner over the bed of my 2018 Tacoma TRD OR DCSB. Frontrunner hardware for over the bed mounting was too short. I searched high and low for a how to or a DIY for mounting that particular rack to bars over the bed. Nothing. I looked at various racks and nothing on the market quite fit my criteria, mainly slightly over the cab so when I purchase my cab rack they run the same level across the entire truck. I also wanted nothing between the legs so I could access gear from the side. Lastly I wanted something strong so I don't have to worry about weight.

I found the following few threads illustrating how to modify Thule, and/or TracRac racks.

The lightbulb went off and I started the project. I purchased a TracRac off FB Marketplace for $200 and started tinkering.

I won't re-hash cutting the rack. Its pretty well lined out in the posts above. I did purchase a Dewalt bit for tapping the holes after I cut the legs and it worked out perfectly, just went slow and used WD 40 to lube the holes...no issues. I cut 5" from each leg, which puts the Frontrunner slightly above the cab.

All in all I am very happy with the project and i'm certain this would work with any rack.
