The 3.5 has more horsepower and practically the same torque as the 4.0

There are many users on here who have had no issues towing heavy trailers with their 3.5

Both the 3.5 and 4.0 will be screaming pulling heavy loads uphill. But the 3.5 still has more horsepower and can take advantage of the extra power in those higher RPMs.

You will not be a happy camper. If you get at all sideways with that kind of weight you going for a ride. I can probably pull 10,000# but I'll be damned if I would go anywhere with it other than my backyard. My camper loaded is around 3 to 3.5K at that weight it's a mostly a comfortable ride and not real hard on the truck.

It would be prudent to have the trailer weight less than the truck. I would be far more concerned about yourself and others than the truck.

Don't forget you have to stop this thing or maybe make an evasive maneuver to avoid something kids, dogs, other vehicles. I don't care about the truck they are easy to replace but I do care about ramifications of getting tangled up in a bad situation. What is your tounge weight? How well is the load distributed? When you approach the max weight you'll need a weight distributing hitch and an auxiliary trans cooler. You truck your body have at it.
