Update- dealer replaced the bad u-joint and it was indeed not the aftermarket one. No charge, no more squeak and no more “slamming” into a lower gear when in cruise control. Filing my paperwork to be reimbursed for the previous u-joint replacement. Very pleased with the results.

Update update. Fucking floored. My drive shaft fell out this morning driving to work. Luckily I was in town not on the highway. Dealership really screwed up this time.1D982C9A-1A36-4004-A967-59F617AD9587.jpg2011531A-AE04-4339-A9B3-C525B0CD43A3.jpg

Lawsuit time. You could have been seriously injured or killed if it broke and "pole vaulted" the truck.

    Glad you are ok!

Someone absolutely needs to be fired or reprimanded. That is not the kind of public view that Toyota wants to have. They should be all over this, calling the dealership manager/owner and being like "WTF ARE YOU DOING??"

The first thing you need to do when you get there this is speak with the highest level person available.

    Absolutely.

I would also expect them to inspect the transmission and differential to ensure no bearings/seals were damaged if it spun widly and shook the hell out of it all.

I should mention this isn’t the first run in I’ve had with this dealership. They changed ownership so I thought I’d try them again. I will never return. I’ll drive an hour to the next closest one. In fact, at this point I don’t trust them to repair the work they just did.

I just had the same problem you guys had with my 6spd. Whenever I was cruising and let my foot off the gas it was fine, but once I stepped on it again the truck would jerk. And it also had a bad vibration at 60mph+.

Sooo I took my truck in to the dealer beeefooore I put on the cheap off-road bumper on eBay (that way they can’t say that the u joints went bad because of the bumper or the bumper voided the extended warranty).

Put on my bumper once I got the truck back from the dealer. 6EF9E556-BD71-46ED-BCBA-3CC7F67D6794.jpg

Now im feeling a slight vibration when I’m driving highway speeds around 60+ but no more jolting/jerk from the truck. Crawled underneath and pushed up on the carrier bearing and sure enough, it’s got about 1/2-3/4 inches of play up and down.

Whyyyyy wouldn’t they CHECK the damn carrier bearing too if they went and changed the u joint.

Took my truck in for this and they told me the noise was the left front wheel bearing and they could replace it for $1300. I know what a bad wheel bearing sounds like. The noise doesn't come from the middle of the truck, or go away when you push in the clutch. I took the truck to an independent shop down the street and told them I thought I had a bad wheel bearing, could they figure out what the noise was. They checked it out and said the wheel bearings were fine. They greased the u joint and the noise went away. No charge. Now the noise is back and I am going to try to find a more honest Toyota dealer and see if I can get it fixed.

DCSB AT no lift 109500 miles the vibrations started. I have been greasing U-joint zerks regularly and they looked ok. Maybe a little wear in the carrier bearing I thought. I had called the dealer back in March 2018 when I received the TSB letter. They said it would vibrate at all speeds if it’s u joints. Well it’s vibrating at all speeds now. Especially bad between 12-40 mph. Now it’s got a squeak under torque on take off. Hope it makes it to appointment next week. Will advise how they treat me. They were great with the frame swap.

The appointment went pretty well. The dealer determined the rear universal joint is “ceased” and missing the gasket. They ordered new one and sent me home with a car wash. I asked if they’ll do all of the u-joints. Nope. Just the bad one. So it cost me nothing but fuel to get 45 miles to dealer for a car wash today. No loaner. I was sent home with it still vibrating like crazy. Part should be in within 2 days. Then another 45 miles back to dealer. I think I’ll have local DS shop look and give quote for one piece DS and never deal with it again.

My appointment with the second dealer was the same. After having the truck for 5 hours they let me know that they will replace it, but they wont have the parts until Wednesday. The noise is getting worse fast. I hope I can make it back on Wednesday. No wash for me though.

Update. Problem fixed. They showed me what was left of the u-joints, not much. They replaced front and rear joints and the shaft. Wash included. Surprising that the first dealer was so bad. Got to be careful.

Dealer called to say rear ujoint is in. They got me in within an hour. Zero cost to me. Feels about 50% better but still have vibration that I didn’t have 1000 miles ago. Wonder if the other ujoints are in fact faulty too. They said the rear one practically fell apart when changed. What a PITA.

Update. Still having vibrations with new rear u-joint. Took it to dealer before ZH-2 expires end of April. Mechanic did 5 minute road test and didn’t sense any issue. I took him for ride and he felt the vibes. So he took DS off and the replacement rear u-joint was stiff. They realized a rabbit ear or something got bent during u joint replacement so they plan to have local ds specialty shop can remedy issue. If not they may put new ds on. Said it costs them $1200. Until then I’m in a cute 18 rav 4.

My 07 does that when I back up and go forward slowly I thought it was the brakes. I'm pretty sure it's the propeller shaft so I will be taking it in this week, with all that wobbling that it's doing.

Just hope you didn't get a ujoint replaced somewhere else before your propeller/drive shaft goes. Just got denied for not having dealer installed ujoint.

I am trying to get my 2008 fixed with this warranty right now. I was told the rear U joints need replaced as well as the propshaft due to the Carrier bearing being bad. The dealership said they will cover the U joints under the warranty however not the Proshaft. I have a call into Toyota to dispute this due to the Warranty extension mentioning the replacement of the proshaft in limited instances. I am trying to find out what is meant by "limited Instance" for replacing the Propshaft. Very irritated at this point.

I just called the dealer about this today, because I too have a squeaky u joint.

My truck has a 3 in lift. I am supposed to drive 1700 miles in it in two weeks. They said they will try to squeeze me in ASAP.

Do you think they will honor it and replace? Or should I just order the parts myself now and replace them on my own?

What is the general consensus around the lift?
