Hey guys I am new to the forum, I dont have a tacoma yet but will be getting one in the future. Its going to be a project truck AKA Project landshark. One of the mods I want would be to supercharge it. I am wondering how much horsepower this would add and also if I would need to work on the transmission and upgrade it or could run the stock transmission. I want to get an automatic. Would I be able to run the stock transmission with a supercharger or would I have to upgrade the transmission?

Welcome. Search for 4.0 Supercharger tips and tricks, but the HP numbers are advertised from Magnuson. I have an AT and run it with no issues. I am geared at 4.88 running 37s as well. A valve body upgrade is nice but I don’t believe necessary for somewhat normal usage. Hooligan bafoonery or Racing may incur additional abuse but there are always improvements to be made on these trucks.

Yeah I would occasionally race it, throw it around some soughnuts and have fun with it but it would not be like that all the time. Its most common use would be daily driver and towing but I would have fun with it. What upgrades to the transmission could I do that would make it less susceptible to injury from "hooliganry"?

A lot of people run these trucks with the auto trans and superchargers ...I'm of the mindset that a manual is much more fun especially with a boosted rig (more control over the power) but it'll still be fast and fun to drive with the auto. Depending on how crazy you want to get, you might want to look into a trans cooler if your truck doesn't have one since the auto trans can overheat easily when you run the truck hard.

I don't have that answer, but welcome to the World. When you get the truck post pics.

Cruiser brothers is in California, not sure but I think southern, check the google machine. They sale a sweet valve body upgrade kit from Australia that is highly recommended for stronger more crisp shifting. It is about 1200 but they do run specials from time to time. There are other kits from ratiotek and others that cost less but I am not personally experienced enough to say if they are better or worse. You get what you pay for usually is a good rule of thumb.

I have a trans cooler, but it came on my truck. I would pull one from a salvage if you don’t have one. LSD instead of the electronic LSD would be nice in the rear end, pre-2009 I believe had the mechanically operates true LSD. Hope this helps.

The 4.0 Tacoma automatic is out of the 1st Gen 4.7 V8 Tundra. Being built for a Tundra V8 it has no issue with the added power. A transmission cooler is always a good idea, the tow package/TRD trucks came with a small factory one, there are larger better aftermarket ones. The manuals are right at at the edge of unable to hold the power. Pressure plate and clutch disc upgrades are advised, if you go smaller pulley on the Supercharger as is popular, the manual will slip unless you do the upgrades.

I just realized you might be talking about a 1st Gen, the above info is 2nd gen. The 1st Gen superchargers are a very different animal. The 2nd Gen Tacoma’s supercharger setup is highly integrated into the OEM setup, including ECU programming with larger OEM TRD injectors for more power safely like you would expect from a factory OEM supercharger. The 1st Gen versions are more of a bolt on that the ECU is unaware of and therefore more prone to detonation and knocking, which adding an aftermarket additional injector can help resolve.

With what I said above I am currently running a stock Magnuson supercharger + URD UCON for engine management.

I have been running this setup for over a year and half and its been pretty stable.
I would NOT use the tune that comes with the Magnuson SC (though this is based of others experiences over a year ago so it may be improved now).
TRD tune seems to work well for some if you don't want to do something like the UCON.

UCON does require replacing the exhaust cam gears.
