If any of you read some of my previous threads you'll know that I had my drive shaft serviced. I'm hoping that perhaps that is the source or cause of what I found today.

I set up and used my new grease gun for the first time, felt pretty satisfying. I rolled under the truck and greased all 3 u joints. However I noticed a bit of red on that round pot light metal on the back of the transmission.

So my question is, is this the beginnings of a leak, or would this potentially be caused by removing the drive shaft when it was worked on?

That's what I was doing for now, I wiped it with a towel and it's definitely bright clean red.

If it is asleep, but would this be considered? Like rear main transmission seal?

Is there a write-up for that? I'm glad you said it is simple.

I could be from when they pulled the driveshaft out. It always looks like its leaking alot more fluid than it actually is

    Awesome.

all right big thanks to everybody, I'll watch it for the next couple of days and see if it comes back, hopefully it doesn't.

Anyone know how long this seal typically lasts?

Pretty simple. Toyota has revised the seal a couple of times so the part number has changed over the years. There is a write up on TW but I think the pictures were hosted and have not been updated so do not show

Just an FYI, I have replaced mine twice and still have it leak enough to form a drip but not enough to make it drip/leak onto the garage floor. I assume that due to my lift that the driveshaft has just enough pressure on the seal to let a litttle fluid out. I pulled my whole drive shaft yesterday and replaced all the u joints and carrier bearing support... I had a new seal to put in since I pulled everything but I could not find the piece of pvc I had used before to tap it in and after rummaging for something that would work with no luck I said fuck it and slapped it back together without the new seal.

Well shoot, I drove up to town to get some coffee and breakfast and I just got back a few minutes ago. It looks like the drip has already built back up to a little bead. So I guess this is going to be my next fix, I do hope that too much hasn't gotten out... I really hate not having the damn dipstick.
