Soil tested this weekend. Irrigation put in and trellises for beans and cucumbers placed. Herb garden planted out. Sage, sweet basil, Thai basil, rosemary, English thyme, lemon thyme, oregano, dill, and chives. Next week plan is to plant out the garden with tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, onions, zucchinis, yellow squash, radishes and peppers. Also planted pots and baskets with pollinator attracting wildflowers. Doggo supervising.

Maybe something a little different, but gardening nonetheless...

Last November we purchased some acreage in the Columbia River gorge area near Hood River, Oregon. I grow west coast native plants for a living and this weekend I was able to put some stock plants into the ground.

Arctostaphylos columbiana, originally found a couple ridges to the west, grown from cuttings.

The native inhabitants. The property is pretty much perfect, there’s just a handful of species from the surrounding area missing, including most evergreens, making things a little more transparent in the winter than I’d like. Nature calls.

Do you have to use anything to support them or do they just grow tall on their own?

Nice! What variety? I usually have a mix of Russian Mammoth and Mongolian Giant in front of my South-facing windows for shade purposes during the summer.

Although at this point I'm not sure how pure the seeds are; I've been saving seeds from the largest ones and replanting them for the following year for 6 years, so I'm sure there's been a fair bit of cross-pollination by now.

6' stakes, but I don't think they were needed. They were about 13' tall.
These were some type of mammoth sunflower, they came from Target.

I still need to dig out my raised beds and lay down some wire mesh to keep the moles and voles out this year. It's starting to get warmer here so I need to get on it.

Whats everyone's recommendations for the base of my raised beds prior to filling them with compost and soil?

I did a 4x8 raised bed using the square foot garden technique and had good luck. I used heavy duty weed fabric. for thing like spuds I used a separate tub. I also went with regular KD wood, not PT. Been 7 years and they are still there, a little spongy but I can't bring myself to use PT even though they say it is fine.

Last year was my first year with that square foot garden bed and I went all in with making the soil from Peet moss, compost, vermiculite and I had 0 weeds all season, my onions were a dream. I am skeptical about it being weed free this year though.

It's funny, every time I post a picture of my garden someone asks that. There isn't one really, I just wanted a rock step into it.
