Thanks to this great community (and YouTube) I try and DYI most mechanical maintenance and repairs myself on all my
engines. Any guys who work on outboards?

I have a Merc 150 outboard on a 21FT Fisher freedom. Its a great boat for fishing and getting the family out on the water

I've had to do some stuff on my Merc 60/45 jet outboard. The overheat indicator module went bad and the horn just kept going off so I eventually disconnected the wiring since I watch the water stream to know it's pumping fine and not overheating. The module is over $100 so I figured why bother. Then it stalled out on me and would only run if I pumped the ball by hand and hit the primer. I pumped the ball too hard and ended up blowing out the fuel filter that was clogged and then had to rebuild all 3 carbs to clean out all the debris. I pulled the jet impeller off to clean up the blades with a file and hopefully I won't need to do anything more. Oh yeah, when I first got it, it was a manual tilt motor so I bought a new power trim kit off Ebay and installed it.

I couldn’t imagine not having power trim. How do you like it?

I went 1 season with the manual tilt. It's spring loaded so it helps you, but the motor is over 200 lbs and I weigh 150 so it took all I had to start to tilt and lean back and lock it into place. There were many times I didn't make it far enough back and it would tilt back down. The power trim is great.

what engine oil is good to use on a Mercury 20HP EFI? Do you stick with the OE/ Mercury oil or is there a different Marine oil that is better? Im due to change the oil but I cant see me taking it in just for that...

Quicksilver is the OEM recomened brand. That’s what use. Changing out the lower end is fairly straightforward.

Remove drain screw. Remove check screw. Pump from the drain side until the oil comes out the top.

It's not an outboard but I've been doing some tinkering on my sprint boat. I put a ZZ3 350 crate motor in it and tweaking the timing, Holley carb, jet nozzles and jet impellers all to see where the best performance/drivability is.
