COMPLETED 5th Gen 4Runner BBK upgrade for 2nd Gen Tacomas

I’ve heard you can use the stock Tacoma lines but I added them as a “just in case” measure. Each one costs less than $5 and from what I’ve read you’d have to bend the Tacoma lines to fit the wider caliper.

Cost on Parts

CALIPERS - Remanufactured 5th Gen 4RUNNER (w/ core exchange) $134.00 FOR BOTH
CALIPER PAINT - DUPICOLOR Caliper Paint - High Gloss $20.00
ROTORS - AKebono Premium Rotors (custom slotted by a friend who does C&C) $96.00 for both.
BRAKE PAD - PowerStop Evolution Ceramic Z17 Brake Pads(Has more bite then the factory Toyota Brake Pads) $30 (I have a wholesale acct)
DUST PLATE - OEM TOYOTA $0.00 (DID NOT USE)
It is not worth the extra $115 and extra 30 mins to replace the plate. The original can be modified in less then 5 mins for both sides. The outer edges can just be pushed back to allow clearance and the portion of the plate that blocks the upper caliper mounting hole can be cleared by whacking it 3-5 times when a rubber mallet.
Stainless steel brake lines and hardlines - I already had the stainless brake lines and the hardlines can be reused with no problem at all. $0.00
BRAKE FLUID - Brembo Dot 4 1 Liter $10.00
Total for this BBK = $290

 

That’s great that you pulled off this upgrade for less than $300 but for me, I’d rather spend the extra $100 or so and the time required to replace the backing plates with the ones designed for the larger rotors. I’m sure beating the OEM Tacoma backing plate will work just fine but I’d feel like I’m half assing the job if I didn’t replace them. And it’s more of a peace of mind thing for me. I also noticed in your pictures you’re running 285 tires on those 7” SEMA wheels, which is another thing I wouldn’t do on my truck for the same reason. Tire manufacturers don’t recommend 285s on anything thinner than 7.5” wheels and again, I stick to their recommendation for peace of mind. But to each their own and the kit looks good with the red calipers behind those SEMA wheels.

Yes, I used those. Not sure what the "hardware" is that's included, nothing but calipers in the box.

 

Yep, I just got my calipers and rotors in the mail on Friday. Only freshly reman’d calipers in the box. I love that they are painted black for me already. When the rest of the parts arrive tomorrow I’ll post a picture and full parts list of everything I bought. Then I just need to pick a day to take off work to install it all.

 

Didn't take us long, my 19yo did most of the work. Brake upgrade and snorkel install in about 5 hours.

 

Great to hear. I’ll be installing stainless lines in the front with the new hard lines, then flushing the full brake system while we bleed it.

 

Just got this upgrade completed this past weekend. No real issues with install and so far brakes feel firmer but really need to bed them in yet, but happy with the way it turned out.

 

I like your caliper color choice. What did you use? It looks similar to the current color on the WRX STI Brembos.

 

I used the Lime Green G2 Brake Caliper paint that I got off of Amazon. Seemed to have good reviews so will see how it holds up, and they had multiple color choices. The paint is brushed on and kind of a pain to make sure you don't get any runs, but it is self leveling. After it cured overnight it looked a lot better than when I was initially brushing it on, put about a total of 4 coats on the calipers. However I would recommend getting a good set of small craft brushes since the brush provided in the kit isn't the greatest and looses bristles.

Rock on. I've heard of the G2 caliper paint before. I painted mine this weekend. Just boring old red with VHT caliper spray paint. They came out pretty good. I have a few spots to touch up where it got chipped/scratched pulling the bailing wire that I used to hang them, but I'll just spray a puddle on some cardboard and brush it on.

 

KCTaco and 4x4Taco09, Thanks for the great thread. I installed my brakes on the truck this weekend. So far so good. I think this will be a good longterm upgrade. I like how I can still buy parts from the local parts store or Toyota instead of special order aftermarket parts that I feel I must stock spares. Attached is what it looks like with 18" wheels. I am now longing for 4x4Taco09's suspension set up.

Awesome write up @nudavinci64 ! Thank you for putting in the work and for all of the pictures of the install. I will be scavenging deep into the local junk yards this weekend to see if I can find a 2010+ 4runner with the front end intact for the dust shields if nothing else.

 

All my parts are in. Went with the dba 4x4 Survival T3 rotors, TRD pads and all the factory parts needed to do a "like" Toyota install. Why? Because I am hard on my truck and demand the most of it.

 

def makes a difference, you can cut and bend but the 4runner ones are bigger if you are going for the protection.
