Hard case for roof rack storage - Pelican alternatives?

I'd like to add a few boxes to my Prinsu to store some gear on my upcoming trip to Alaska. Pelican seems prohibitively expensive to me. I found the Roam Adventure Rugged Case, and was all set to buy two of the 95L units, but for both cases they wanted over $100 in shipping which seems a little high to me. Has anyone used another alternative? I'm looking for something a little more stout than something like the Rubbermaid Action Packer.

Depending on what size you are looking for, Plano gun cases are a good option as @fatfurious2 said above. I have them on my 4runner and store all of my recovery gear in them. They do make larger options depending on what all you are planning on storing in them.

Forgot all about Plano. They look pretty good and at a way better price. Seems like their biggest option is about 5" high I wonder if they have anything a bit taller.

 

They have the Plano sportsman trunk if you are looking for something larger, but thats gonna act like a sail on a roofrack.

 

The medium doesn't look like a bad idea. 12" tall which is what I was looking at with the Roam Adventure case.

 

Keep an eye on craigslist, you can find used pelicans there pretty cheap.

 

Saw these Seahorse cases. Thought that was my answer, but they too want $50/case to ship. I don't know shipping bothers me that much, but it's a hard pill to swallow especially when SSO shipped my 85 lb bumper for $49. Looking like its going to be something from Plano.

 

agree with the Plano sportsman trunks. they are pretty good with dust and water resistance. I have an action packer but I don't trust it on the prinsu rack with the way the lid is designed. they have free shipping and are cheap on Amazon ($34):

I like that! Price looks really good too. Similar to the Plano ones but the price is way better and if I don't like it then no biggie. Even though I have sworn off HF for most things, this looks too good to not try.

Pelican is extremely durable, what i've always used in the military, and is generally worth the cost for equipment that you NEED protected. But for your case, you would probably be fine with an alternative. You can find all sorts of them on Amazon. Plano works well but is NOT waterproof. Good luck!

 

Local FB Marketplace or military used surplus finds are the best bet for this. Absolutely zero sense in buying something like a brand new Pelican case and then drilling holes through it. That being said, Plano options are generally around the same price range if you can't find anything used local.

 

I was a big fan of milsurplus Hardigg rotomolded cases for awhile, as they are head and shoulders more durable than most stuff on the commercial market. I still have a M249 SAW case I use for camping gear, but it is heavy. While not a great bang for the buck, if you have disposal income, aluminum Zarges or Alu-boxes are the way to go.

 

Apache 9800 rifle cases from Harbor Freight are a good choice if you're looking to buy new. You can score them for around $100 during sales sometimes.

 

There is a good deal on Ebay for Pelican 1620 cases that were meant to carry ventilators but never did. These have wheels and handle so good option for folks who want to use in their bed too.

I would not put a 1620 on the roof. Exterior dimensions are 24.8" × 19.6" × 13.9" that thing would be excellent for two things: drag and catching bugs. Don't get me wrong, I love those cases and have two where my back seat used to be, but I'd never throw a 1620 up top. A 1750 or iM3220 is the tallest I would go with on the roof. But that is just me.
