My philosophy, is if I'm destined to win I don't need to buy a ticket, I'm going to win regardless.

Unlike most people I know, I'm not actually a fan of Krispy Kreme donuts. They're overly sweet, the cake donuts are over dense, and their coffee is a little bitter. Dunkin, as any Patriots fan will tell you, is better.

Also, they apparently used to be Nazis.

Strictly speaking it's more of a tax on stupidity, or at least on financial illiteracy.

These qualities also tend to result in being poor.

Interesting. While I "get" that a company has to have/enforce policies regarding use of equipment, and we likely don't know the whole story, you'd think Verizon would have handled this differently given the optics...

Verizon suspends worker for rescuing cat named Princess Momma from utility pole

A Philadelphia-area Verizon employee named Maurice German has found himself in some minor hot water with his employer, after he decided to use company equipment to rescue a cat named Princess Momma that had been stuck on a utility pole for 12 hours.

According to media reports, German came to the rescue after the cat’s owner called the local fire department, animal rescue and the telephone company. All, apparently, to no avail. To avoid catastrophe — no, I’m not going to hyphenate that word to create the pun, as much as I’d like to — German reportedly used the hydraulic lift in a Verizon “bucket” truck to scoop the kitty to safety

That’s apparently in violation of the company’s safety rules, for which he was suspended without pay for three weeks. It’s interesting to consider how exactly these rules can be applied — what if an employee successfully stops someone from robbing a store? Are they disciplined for putting themselves in harm’s way?

“For safety reasons, our trucks and related equipment are not intended to be used in the area in which he was operating, specifically around electrical wires,” a company spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch about the cat rescue. “While our actions may not be popular, he potentially put his life and those around him in jeopardy.”

Naturally, this story has spread like wildlife across social media. To the point that more than one crowdfunding campaign has been launched to help pay German’s expenses.

One fellow Verizon co-worker launched this GoFundMe campaign, which raised more than $7,000 for German. Another fundraising campaign, from someone who identified themselves as the owner of the home outside of which the cat was rescued, raised almost $3,400 of its $2,400 goal. Meaning, all told, German earned more than $10,000 for his effort.

Apparently as a result of the backlash they got for this online, Verizon decided to respond. According to the carrier, it had made a donation to Pennsylvania Animal Rescue & Protection.

    Pretty straightforward.
Guy uses company lift truck to rescue cat near electric lines. Cat and or worker come in contact with electrical lines.
Worker dies, company sue for millions because idiots are rewarded for stupidity every day.

Case in point employee breaks safety rules, gets suspended for 3 weeks without pay.
GoFundMe gives him 10 large to help with his expenses.

Next week, employee finds cat near job site, "rescues" cat so he can get 3 weeks off and 10 grand.

    He's not so lucky.
Gets lots of voltage and eternity off
    ....

I'd I were his boss. Fired. Terminated.

Safety is a condition of employment.

If he had gotten into the electrical lines, how many people are now at risk to save him?

A friend of mine repeatedly calls lottery tickets the Stupid Tax.

He was in line at the QuikTrip with his daughter and someone in front of them buys some lottery tickets.

Of course his daughter pipes up, "Look Dad! He's paying the Stupid Tax!"

Based on the number of guffaws, apparently the majority of people in line agreed.

Florida homeless man calls cops to report he paid for sex -- but got scammed, police say

    5.jpg

Florida cops say a man who called 911 to report a crime appeared to forget he was admitting to one himself.

Jon Omer Sengul, 50, was arrested after he allegedly volunteered to police that he'd paid four people $500 for at least one of them to come to his Days Inn hotel room to engage in sexual activities, WPTV reported.

Sengul, who is reportedly homeless, called 911 on March 22 after the people he said he paid never showed up to his West Palm Beach hotel room, officials said.

An officer arrived at the hotel, where Sengul explained the situation and confirmed he was soliciting another person for sex, WPTV reported. He said he decided to call police when he realized he'd been scammed.

Sengul was arrested and charged with one count of soliciting a prostitute. It wasn't immediately clear if cops ever tracked down the alleged scammers.

It also wasn't known how the homeless Sengul came by $500 to allegedly pay for sex, but he was able to post bail -- another $500 -- and secure his release from jail Sunday, too.

Any way you turn it, the cat *will* come down.

    Eventually.

In Russia they just cut down the tree and let it fall into the power lines.
