A rinse with only water is not good enough but better than nothing, it's best to soap down. Go to a coin op if there's one in your area & pressure wash with soap then rinse off. You may not see rust right away but it will creep up if you go often.

I pressure wash with soap the day I get back from Pismo including the engine bay. A few days to a week later, pressure wash again, sand will still come out.

As for getting the sand out of my air vents, well that takes a couple of weeks using the AC everyday.

Unfortunately, for all of the Long Island beach 4x4 places I've been, they are all rutted out pretty bad, and it's not a place to go speeding around. But, it's good that you aired down, it will definitely help prevent getting stuck in the soft sand!

Another thing I do after coming off the beach is spray the tires with tire wet/foam. Not only does it look good (;)), but it puts some moisture back into the tires.
